Carol Lazzaro-Weis Obituary
Lazzaro-Weis Carol M., PhD Age 72, of Columbia, MO (originally West Oak Lane, Phila.), of cancer on Feb. 26, 2022, predeceased by parents Domenic and Marie (Caruso) Lazzaro and niece Elena Lazzaro. She is survived by son Peter Weis, brother Gerald Lazzaro, sister Joyce Lazzaro, nephew Domenico (Myra) Lazzaro, great niece Hunter Lazzaro, and great nephew Austin Lazzaro, and many cousins and friends, including long-time partner George Simpson. After graduating from Philadelphia High for Girls in 1967, she went on to earn an undergraduate degree in French Language and Literature from the Pennsylvania State University, a master's degree in the same discipline from Villanova University, and a master's and a PhD in Romance Languages from the University of Pennsylvania. She had a long career as a professor at many universities in the U.S. and Europe and retired as Professor Emerita of French and Italian Studies from the University of Missouri in 2017. During her tenure at the University of Missouri she taught courses in French and Italian, Afro-Romance Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Canadian Studies, Black Studies and chaired the department of Modern Languages from 2003-2005. Her research career included publication of twenty-six scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals and forty-two book reviews for journals in her field. She presented fifty papers at academic conferences and worked on the editorial board of seven separate publications. She obtained eighteen institutional and research grants. She translated three books from French to English. Working with Dr. Martha King of the University of Maryland European Division, she also translated three short fiction anthology collections from Italian to English. Her book From Margins to Mainstream: Feminism and Fictional Modes in Italian Women's Writings (1969-1992) was published in 1993 by University of Pennsylvania Press. She was active in many professional associations including but not limited to the Modern Language Association, the American Literary Translator's Society, the American Association of Teachers of French and Italian, the American Association of Eighteenth Century Studies, and the American Association of Canadian Studies. She served in executive positions of the American Association of Italian Studies and as its president from 2009-2016. A Memorial Service will be held 11:15 A.M. on June 11 at the Thomas Paine Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3424 Ridge Pike, Collegeville, PA.
