DANIEL FARRELL Obituary

FARRELL

DANIEL FARRELL, was a man of contradictions. Born with distinctive, fiery red hair, he sometimes felt the urge to dye it bright green or blue. He was 37 when he passed away Friday, June 6, 2014 but some days looked so much closer to his teen years. His wit, razor sharp some days, could also lurch toward the kind of humor that goes over big in middle school.
An introvert unlikely to share much, he reached out to make friends at his favorite haunt - the Locust Bar - where he was known to always be ready to help a friend or ask them about family. That tendency toward random acts of kindness, Dan's family believes, was instilled by his maternal grandfather, Tom McHugh, known to family as "Pop-Pop."
Laughter must mix with tears when family and friends discuss Dan.
He loved to travel with family, to Ireland, England and the Jersey Shore, where he once begged his mother, Mary to extend the trip with his nephew, Tommy by one day and then got so sunburned that he could not get out of bed.
Dan, aka "Floyd," was the only person to ever fall overboard on the Archangel, a New Jersey fishing charter captained by Mickey Melchiondo, known as "Dean Ween" in the band Ween. Dan went overboard on that 2013 trip grabbing for a dropped rod. He surfaced with the rod, was hauled back into the boat and then helped haul in a striped bass as well. He spoke about it as one of the best days of his life. Another treasured memory for Dan was attending the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies World Series Champion-ship parade on South Broad Street with his sister Rebecca and nephew Tommy.
Dan was a master electrician at Independent Wiring and spent his spare time working in concessions and maintenance for Aramark at Phillies games in sections 117 - 126 at Citizens Bank Park. His coworkers at the ballpark said the games will never be the same without him.
He leaves behind his mother, Mary Turtle, father Mark Turtle, sisters Heather Brennan and Rebecca Seay, brothers-in-law Chris Brennan and Chris Seay, aunts Pat McHugh and Michele McHugh, uncle John McHugh, grand-mother Elva McHugh, nephew Tommy Seay, cousin Connor McHugh and a turtle, Frank.
While Dan often struggled with life, he knew he had the full support of his mother, sisters and his aunt Pat along with the rest of his family. A devoted fan of Star Wars, his family bids him farewell with these words: May the force be with you, Dan!

This is a picture of me and Danny the day he jumped overboard after my lost fishing rod. I was confused at first, one second we're hooked into a big fish, and the next second there was a big splash and Dan disappeared! He surfaced with my rod in hand, we pulled him into the boat by the seat of his shorts and then he landed the fish! We caught a 50lber that day and a 48 lber as well! We had a lot of great memories from over the years, he was so sincere and quiet. I really liked him a lot and it's not gonna be the same without him around. R.I.P. Danny, you are loved and will be missed!

Danny and I have been fiends for over 20 years, but in the last six years we became extremely close again. I'll miss his sly smile and his giggle. I'll always remember the time we spent together fondly. Danny, I am so sorry and I hope you know how much you meant to me and how much I loved you. My sincere, heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. Rest in peace.

I was shocked at Danny's passing and shocked when I saw he was 37. The first time I served him at the Locust, I carded him. He enjoyed a couple yuengling lagers and we often talked about the Phillies. I thought he was a real nice guy.

I never met this gentleman. But, I wish I had. He seems to have been quite a fellow.

He may be gone, but never forgotten. I hope he knew how much the people around him loved him. Dan will always have a special place in my heart and soul where he resides. Your family has my very deepest sympathies.

I'll never forget from the time we met at a very young age, and dug for treasures in Pop-Pop's back yard. We were sure they were some amazing discovery we had unearthed. Unbeknownst to us at the time. Pop-Pop was putting the stuff there for us to find. I guess that is how our entire, 30+yr, friendship can be described. We were always searching for something special in this world. Something different from the norm, something adventurous. I never lost touch with Dan for more than a couple years at a time, and since Facebook. We never went more than a week, usually, without talking. I never felt like we had grown apart as friends, like I have with so many of my other friends of the past. No matter the distance between us, or the amount of time that had past. We could always pick right back up where we left off. That is rare to find in a person. A true friend, a kindred spirit. I have so many memories of the time Dan, and I spent together, as a kid, and as an adult. I never have laughed so hard as I have with some of the things we were involved in, talked about, or witnessed. We had the same sense of humor, that some just couldn't understand, and could look at each other in certain situations, and just laugh without even saying anything. Like we already knew what the other found funny, and wanted to say. The amount of pain, and loss I feel for this unfortunate occurrence will never go away, but the countless good times we had will be my remedy for my grief, and allow me to carry on. I'm sitting here writing this, and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is on. We saw that in the theater, in 1989. It's almost poetic that it's on. So until we meet again, and I will be looking forward to another one of Dan and Matt's Excellent Adventures. Where we can make fun of the angels or something!
