David Rasner Obituary

Rasner David Samuel Center City Philadelphia Attorney at Law. David S. Rasner, 77, of Center City Philadelphia died on Saturday, January 13th, 2024 after a prolonged illness due to Mesothelioma. David was a Philadelphian, born January 8, 1947 to Benjamin and Ethel Rasner and raised predominantly in Mt. Airy. His work ethic, humility, and community engagement came from his parents, who ran the newsstand in the Architects Building on 17th and Sansom. He graduated from Central High School, class of 222, and graduated from Temple University in 1968. He completed graduate work in European History at University of Maryland, and went on to law school at Villanova University. David was a senior partner at a prestigious law firm, Fox Rothschild, LLP. He was a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Pennsylvania Board of Law Examiners, Pennsylvania Bar Association Family Law Section, Philadelphia Bar Association Family Law Section, and Montgomery Bar Association Family Law Section. David was a mentor to many, and received several awards honoring his work as a Family Law Attorney. In 1992 Philadelphia Mayor Rendell appointed David to the Board of Trustees of the Philadelphia History Museum at the Atwater Kent. David served on the Board since then and was Board president until his death. He spearheaded the effort to keep the collection together in Philadelphia and to transfer it to Drexel University. David also sat on the Board of Trustees of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation. Aside from his robust professional life, David and his wife Caroline enjoyed spending their time together at their farmhouse in Bucks County, lovingly known as Camp David. An avid skeet shooter, he and his wife enjoyed entertaining and developing their property into a quiet retreat that many friends and colleagues visited and enjoyed. Caroline and David also enjoyed adventure traveling across many places from Papua New Guinea, Africa, to the Amazon jungle. David met the love of his life, Caroline, in 1986 and were married for 35 years. He is survived by his step-son, William John Wischmann of Philadelphia, and his grandson Ace. He is also survived by many cousins and relatives. David cherished his loved ones, and the prospect of death caused him to reflect on his many timeless and important friendships that mattered greatly to him. David is known for his kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness, and integrity. He was well-liked and respected among his friends and colleagues, but what he treasured most was his "good name." David would often say "there's no right way to do the wrong thing." A wise man; a gentleman; a friend who will be missed. Relatives and friends are invited to Services, Thursday, January 18, 2024, 10:00 A.M., at JOSEPH LEVINE & SONS, 4737 Street Rd., Trevose, PA. Interment to follow at Montefiore Cemetery. The family respectfully requests contributions in lieu of flowers, be made to Magee Rehabilitation 1513 Race Street Philadelphia, PA. 19102 or The Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel, PO Box 8215, Philadelphia, PA 19101-9684. www.levinefuneral.com

What a shock to find out that the world has lost David. David was a wonderful and genuine person and a great attorney. I met David when I was a Paralegal at Fox more than 35 years ago and always visited him when I went back to visit. He was a great friend, a voice of reason, a great sounding board. He always had a smile on his face no matter what. This is a great loss, first and foremost to his family and then to his friends and clients. He will be greatly missed.

David was a mentor and friend of mine who took me under his wing on the Philadelphia History Museum board. I cannot thank him enough for all the encouragement and guidance he gave me. I will miss our walks through Rittenhouse and certainly, his calm and sage advice. Rest well David.

Caroline and family, please receive my condolences for your loss (our loss). David and I rekindled our friendship at our 50th class reunion from Central High, a heartwarming reconnection following my living abroad many years after college. Soon after that, he began giving my daughter legal counsel through difficult times which he continued doing until his passing. I don´t have words to express what comfort he gave us. He readily became her friend as well as her counselor and a little bit of a rabbi, too. He merged warmth, personal insights, and humor with his excellent legal advice. I know your grief from my wife´s passing away six years ago and pray that you will find your way forward. Please feel free to reach out to me if ever you would like.

As so many have noted here, David was an immensely warm man. He treated people with kindness, compassion and respect. It's a bit of cliche to say of someone that to know him was to love him, but that really was true about our friend, David. He made our world better, and his memory will be a comforting blessing.

I only recently learned of David´s passing. His many professional accomplishments were overshadowed only by his goodness of heart. I was honored to make a contribution to Magee Rehab in his memory.

To Caroline, William, and Ace louise and I extend condolences for the loss what you have suffered with a loss of this extraordinary man. I knew david for many years in a professional capacity. I freely recommended David friends who are in need uniform those folks were better for accepting their recommendations. As others have indicated here Was an extraordinary mediator, and had a well-deserved reputation for bringing parties at odds with each other to accept reasonable resolutions.
But beyond our friendship in our capacity, david and I came to have a far deeper connection as we were both dealing with difficult life circumstances which ultimately brought David to this end and for For me the loss of an extraordinary friend. We spent many hours over the last couple of months at camp david and at the Philadelphia home. My regret is I´m not satisfied that I gave David a proper goodbye and hope that he can accept my failure in that regard. Knowing David as I do I am confident that he can and will accept the failings of others.

David set the gold standard personally and professionally for his compassion, love of life and humor. Some 35 years ago, David befriended a uniquely funny and gifted young attorney, the late Kathy McDonnell, and became a part of our friend group. He truly loved and supported this group of funny, talented characters with an open heart. He helped so many of us navigate through some tough times and did so with love. I will miss my dear friend and send my condolences to Caroline and his family.

I am broken hearted with the loss of my dear friend, David. He was always kind softspoken and an advocate for what is right. He had a sweet way of poking fun at folks in authority who just did not understand what was right. He loved his family beyond measure. When I saw him just before Christmas, he kept saying that he wanted what was easiest for everyone else. He was selfless and generous up to the end of his life.
Please accept my condolences for the loss of your wonderful husband.

David was so genuinely a good person that he became a life long friend I valued and respected immensely! You couldn't walk with or go anywhere with David without people approaching him and saying hello - you can't fake that. He treated everyone with respect. A profound loss, but a life well lived.

Caroline and family - I was the Boston friend that you never met.
Going back to 3rd grade at Edmunds Elementry, to Leeds Junior High School and on to the 222 at Central High School.
I admired David's accomplishments from afar (including his best decision, marrying you) - and we would catch up with so many phone calls over the years.
I am so sorry for your loss, actually - everyone's loss who had the joy of being his friend.
May his memory, and those of your memories together, be a blessing.
