He is survived by his children, Brenda Hill and husband Charles, Judy Pounds and husband Ronald, Steve Atwood and wife Debbie, Sheila Elliott and husband Steve, Toni Shaw and husband Tony; grandchildren, Craig Pounds (Jennifer), Eric Pounds (Cynthia), Stephen Jernigan (Paige), Andrew Shaw (Ashley), Mitchell Shaw, Patrick Shaw, Kent Elliott (Shilo), Stephanie Gilchrist (Darrell), Taylor Elliott (Brittany), Brinkley Elliott and Amanda Banks (Jason); 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife,Virginia Jones Atwood; brothers, George, Thomas, Allen, Bobby and Harold; sisters, Doris Strickland and Eunice Barbour.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Gideons International PO Box 140800 Nashville, TN 37214. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00pm at the funeral home and at other times at Mr. Atwood's home, 4625 Auburn Knightdale Rd., Raleigh. Online condolences may be made to the Atwood family at www.mclaurinatpinecrest.com. Arrangements are with McLaurin Funeral Home, Clayton.
