I've known Ed Halpern for many years through various roles in various positions within the Philly Folk Fest & PFSS. He was a kind (and one of a kind) man and will be missed.

As a minor player in the Cage's colorful history, I still remember both of you fondly, as well as Al Needleman and a HOST of others...fine French onion soup, wonderful roast beef sandwiches which, if I put enough pepper on, no one else would bum! My travels have taken me far and landed me in Denver, Colorado, but my heart has remained for many years in Philly, centered at the Gilded Cage! I wish you, as always, abiding peace!

There is an unofficial Philadelphia Folk Festival discussion group. I posted this 5/12/06.
Charlie Miller writes
Ed was a true gentleman and loved and respected by all. He and Esther have been the backbone of Folk in Philadelphia from the days at the Guilded Cage until now. He will be sorely missed.
Either you or I have misspelled G(u)ilded. Your way would refer to guilds which were very exclusive associations of artisans such as carpenters, bricklayers, musicians which were replaced by Unions which were intended to be, among other things, more open to new ideas and people. And that would certainly describe The Cage, a place for people to make music together, to see and be seen by whomever.
Gilded, in my mind, would stand for Esther, as in the song, "I'm only a bird in a gilded cage" who was Ed's partner in life and business and the featured performer in the back room on Friday nights.
Many "young" people "ran away from home" to Center City Philadelphia to explore and enrich parts of themselves which didn't seem to fit in with their "home" communities. Those with music in their hearts and soles (intended) landed at the Cage and more or less stayed.
I ran from West Philadelphia, Penn's campus. It wasn't very far, but others followed Billy Penn's layout of Philadelphia as the wheel hub with spokes out in all directions blocked only by bodies of water and later railroad tracks by bus, trolley, train, and car.
Without Ed and Esther, no Cage. Without the Cage no PFS, no PFF, no Philadelphia Folk popularity, decline, revival, etc., etc.
And it was Ed, standing behind that Espresso machine all night at least Friday and Saturday and on Sunday afternoons besides working a full week, that we, who were there, all remember. He guarded the machine, what it produced, what it earned, and he guarded his other great love, Esther. He was the boss that we loved or we loved to hate.
For those of you on this list who weren't around there at that time, I post this long message to share with you the reasoning, in case you wondered, behind the intensity of feeling and distress in people you knew which had its roots in their knowledge of the impending loss of the Rock of Gibraltar of Folk music in the Greater Philadelphia area.
