Ernest Cohen Obituary

COHEN Ernest, M.D. Age 86, of Doylestown, Pa., passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024. Born in Chester, Pa., October 30, 1937. He was the son of the late Ben and Sarah (Gentner) Cohen. Beloved husband of 63 years to Elinor (Soll) Cohen. Special dad to Amy and Andy Schaeffer and Robert and Kim Cohen. Caring pop pop of Natalie and Sam Cohen, and Sara Schaeffer. Brother to Norma and the late Sam Silverman and Renee and Stan Cohen. Ernie graduated from West Phila. High and went to Temple University and Temple University School of Medicine, graduating in 1962. He then did his internship and surgical residency at Abington Memorial Hospital. Finishing his training, he was called to duty in the Navy, serving 6 months at Newport, R.I., and one year in DaNang, Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division. Upon his return he served 6 more months at Phila. Naval Hospital. He was an honorable officer, especially during his time in Vietnam, often operating on children in an adjoining village with cleft palates which he corrected when things were quiet at his base. Ernie and his family then settled in New Orleans where he practiced at Touro Infirmary. He developed cherished friends, all of which felt blessed to have him in their lives. He retired in 2000, but continued to teach Surgery at LSU School of Medicine. Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, and he and Elinor returned to Washington Crossing, and then to Pine Run Independent Living Community where again, his friends were like family. Relatives and friends are invited to Memorial services at LEVINE's FUNERAL HOME, Street Rd., Trevose, Pa. on April 3rd, at 12:30 P.M. Interment will take place at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Route #532, Newtown, Pa. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Lewis Katz School of Medicine in Phila., or Pine Run, Attn: Scholarship Committee, 777 Ferry Rd., Doylestown, Pa., 18901. www.levinefuneral.com

To the Family of Dr. Cohen, May we extend our deepest sympathies to you at this most difficult time. Ernie was a special friend and physician to our father during his final illness. They were colleagues at Touro and our father had the deepest degree of personal affection and professional respect for him throughout their association. I came to know him later as a friend and colleague at the LSU School of Medicine where he was devoted to teaching the next generation of physicians. He never failed to greet me warmly and with unceasing courtesy. He was fine man and a well respected surgeon and teacher. He will be deeply missed my anyone who had the good fortune to cross his path.

Dr. Cohen and I shared the experience of graduation from Temple medical school, service in the US Navy, and practice of surgery in the same New
Orleans hospitals. As a friend, he was affable, sincere and loyal. As a surgeon, he was meticulous, cautious and deliberate. As a physician, he was devoted, caring and held in high esteem by his patients. His portrait embellishes the image of high moral character each of us would expect of an officer, a gentleman, and a physician. Physical form fades-what we leave behind us is the full measure of our existence. May family and friends abide the peace in which he rests. K.Dieffenbach, MD

Dr. Cohen was the best! Excellent surgeon, very nice person. Treated his patients with respect. We were sorry when he retired, but it was well deserved. Rest well Dr. Cohen. Friends at Touro Infirmary
