CALLAHAN
EUGENE J., 85, of Mt Laurel NJ passed away peacefully Friday, June 27, 2014, sur-rounded by his family.
Gene was born March 31, 1929, the son of the late James P. Callahan and the late Mary (Molly) Tormey Callahan. He was raised in the Port Rich-mond section of Philadelphia and attended St Ann's Grammar School, La Salle College Prepatory High School and graduated from North Catholic High School. After 2 years of military service in Germany, he began a career at the Philadelphia Inquirer from which he retired 43 years later.
In 1953 Gene married the late Margaret Mary (Peg) Roedell. They are survived by six children and their spouses Margaret (Kevin) Baker of Fairfield Conn., Kevin (Trish) of Moorestown NJ , Jim (Paula) of Mt. Laurel NJ, Gene (Lisa) of Edgewater Park NJ , Chris (Terry) of Hainesport NJ, and Tim (Patty) Callahan of Lewisberry PA; 16 grand-children Bryan, Amanda, Brendan, Sean, Maura, Liam, Conor, Casey, Colleen, Caitlin, Dan, Maggie, Joe, Meaghan, Sarah, Hannah and 7 great grandchildren Liam, Declan, Annie, Ryan, Charlie, Max and Lila Rae. In 1997 Gene married the late Margaret (Peg) Scott Callahan.
In addition to spending time with his family and friends Gene enjoyed golf and bowling in his retirement. He was a member of the Travelers, a Laurel Lanes Senior Bowling League championship team. For many years in support of his children, Gene participated in activities at Corpus Christi Church and School in Willing-boro where he ran the church carnival and Holy Cross High School in Delran where he was president of the Fathers Club. He was also an active member of the Sacred Heart Council Knights of Columbus Willing-boro NJ where he was a past Grand Knight and achieved the fourth degree.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Thursday July 3rd, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 42 W Main St., Moorestown NJ 08057. A Viewing will be held for Gene from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Thursday in McCHESNEY FUNERAL HOME, 30 W Main St., Moorestown, N.J. Burial will be in the Our Lady of Grace Cemetery in Langhorne , PA. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation in Gene's name to a charity of your choice.
