A Man for All Seasons
Chaly (Charles T.) Mullen
September 2, 2011
Dear friend, I,ve often thought of you through the years. Most recently, each time I did my banking business on line, you were the answere to one of the challaege questions: "Who was your favorite teached in High School?" My loss for having not told you so before you were called away. Cardnial Dpughterty, '67.

Fran was ordained two years ahead of me in Rome. When I was ordained in 1963, he gave me a gift of $5 and afterwards he met my family on a trip to Vienna. He was a special friend, a man I always looked up to, a joyful presence, a person I felt was very close to God. I am sure he is interceding for us all now.

To the Family of the late Rev. Msgr Francis X. Meehan, I am a former student of his as I attended CDHS 1965-1969, he was my religion teacher in my junior year. I always admired his quiet demeanor which I feel was one of his strengths, he always got his point across. He was the example of a person dedicated to God. May God continue to Bless you and your family knowing that your brother is resting with the Lord.

To the Meehan Family, . How happy we are that Msgr. Meehan is truly in the presence of Our Heavenly Father. He sees the face of Jesus through the Holy Spirit. I am told that this was his wish! Alleluia!!

Joe, our request for God's healing grace to you and your family in this difficult time. I smile whenever I think of Franny. He had a great mind – he and I sat next to each other in philosophy at St. Charles and matched syllogistic conclusions. Despite his back problems later in life, he was a great athlete. I can still see him coming around the tree, puffing up the hill, and winning the 440 race for our class in our sem "olympics." But I'll remember him most for his charming personality. I received many of his graceful smiles that always signaled genuine interest in me and my family. Our church, society and seminary class already miss this giant of a man. Peace.

I am writing this note to my beloved Father Meehan as We always used to call him. I think he is here around us and he did not depart.
My family and I owe him a lot. We moved to SSJ about 11 years ago, didn't know anyone or anything, he truly welcomed us in a very warm way. He supported our presence. Father Meehan encourged us to get involved.
I can't forget his visits to me while I was recovering from my Cancer. Six years ago, he would come to the house to offer me communion in a cold snowy day....I still can't beleive he did that! When he retired I felt that my dad is leaving. Father Meehan waited around and left as we are leaving SSJ because my sons graduated.
RIP Father Meehan, you deserve to be in Paradise with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear Father Joe and members of the Meehan Family:
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has certainly lost a dedicated and faithful priest who was loved and respected by all who knew him.
I still remember the good times we had at Our Lady of Ransom Parish, where I belonged. Working at the Rectory on Sundays, we always found time to chat about St. Hubert's High School (my Alma Mater) and Cardinal Dougherty High School. Those were the days!
God has taken him home but he will not be forgotten. I am proud to say " he was my friend". Rest in peace.

Dear Father Joe and members of the Meehan Family, Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. I've known Father Meehan since 1967 when he was a resident at my home parish, Our Lady of Ransom, and I was a sophomore at St. Hubert's High School. He was one of the finest priests I've ever met -- a noted theologian and a humble and caring person with a great sense of humor. He has shared many happy memories with our family over the years and we were blessed to have him concelebrate our wedding in 1977. He was the one who suggested to me when I was a senior in high school that I should consider working for the Archdiocese and 41 years later, I still am! His passing is a great loss to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and to all those who knew, loved and respected him. Philly lost a great priest and we lost a dear friend on July 22. He will always have a special place in our hearts and prayers and we shall never forget him. Rest in peace.

Father Meehan was my Religion teacher in sophomore year at Bishop Shanahan High School. He was soft spoken and exuded knowledge about our faith and his vocation. I followed his writings in the Standard and Times and always gleaned some new aspect of my faith in his columns. RIP Father Meehan.

I knew Father Francis when I was a student at St. Charles Seminary. He was the first person who empowered me to see the importance of social justice and its impact on the church and the rest of the world. He truly was the greatest example of what a good priest should and can be. He will be missed.

My husband introduced me to Father Meehan when we first began dating. I remember him as a kind, loving and gentle servant of God. We had the honor of having Father Meehan concelebrate our wedding Mass. Seeing him there with his warm smile is something my husband and I will cherish forever. God bless you, Father Meehan!

My condolences to the Meehan family. Fran was a classmate of mine at the Prep. I saw him on several occasions. Whenever I saw him, he was smiling and cheerful and that is how I will always remember him. He was a saintly man, a humble man, and a wonderful priest. The world would be a better place if there were more people like Fran Meehan.

To the Meehan family,
My deepest sympathies to all of you. I was fortunate to have had a wonderful relationship with Fran for 44 years. I feel so honored to have know him but even more to have been called his friend. The world was so blessed to have him. He was a great priest and a champion for peace."He has fought the good fight he has finished the race." Now it is up to us to follow his example. I will always remember his wonderful smile.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I haven't had any contact with Fran since the Prep graduation day in 1954. While in High School, Fran was an exceptional athlete and scholar. Frankly, I was very much surprised that he entered the Ministry. Over the years I would occasionally read some article that he authored. He had a flair for writing and I must admit that sometimes his views on some topic would not mesh with mine and I was tempted to call him. I never did. My great loss. Fran never minced words. He spoke his mind and convictions. I understand from colleagues that he suffered some physical problems that caused him great pain and discomfort. He is at peace now with the Lord that he has so humbly served these past fifty years. May he "Requiescat in Pace".

I met Father Meehan when he was a young priest serving as Director of Religious Education for the Archdiocese of Phila. He was a kind and gentle person and became kinder and gentler as the years passed. Eternal rest grant unto you, dear Fran, for your goodness and long suffering.
Our deepest sympathy and prayers to his family.
