Hey Gary,
I wanted to say Thank You!! Thank You for everything that you have done for me and everyone around you.You have really touched everyone's heart and we will Never forget that about you. When I had asked you to be Godfather to Stevie, You smiled and you told me that you would talk to Anne about it. Then when I came to you and told you that I had asked my Nephew Eddie to be Godfather, You turned around and said with a smile that it was great that I had asked my Nephew to be Godfather to Stevie, It really should be kept in the family. After all was said and done, You still were my friend and you never gave up hope. When I told you that I was scared of becoming a father because I was afraid to be a bad father, You told me, " You will be a wonderful Father, Never say that you going to be a bad father because you could never be a bad father. You will make a Wonderful Father. Remember, It's a wonderful feeling to have your child there with you when you come home at night and just seeing your child grow is a wonderful feeling in itself. You will say to yourself, I'm a great father. " After you told me that I have to say that you were right, I am a wonderful father and I have to say that when you told me that, It really touched my heart. I will never forget you Gary.
When me and Stevie go to bed, We always say Good Night to everyone up in Heaven and the first name that comes up is " Gary ". That goes to show you that you have been more than just a friend, You were family to us...Good Night Gary, The Helvitson Family loves you!!!!
Please do me a favor while your up there in wonderful hands with The Lord, Tell Mary and Tony Cianci and Hawk that I said hi.

We drag ourselves into work looking around and seeing his presence everywhere and maybe that’s what we seek. We miss him dearly. We knew him as Gary, he was our friend and he was part of our family. He was loved and respected in the highest regard by the 15th district, 5 squad.
We can recall things that Gary did in his duties as the Community Relations Officer that others would not take the time or the effort to do nor that Gary would accept recognition for. Like the handicapped boy in the District, that Gary went out and bought a present for each and every year. Like the resident on the lower end that Gary made it a point to talk to and visit just to show him that somebody cared. Like the officers that Gary made sure always received the recognition that they deserved by way of a plaque or an Awards ceremony. Like the community leaders who knew that Gary was the go to guy when a problem needed to be solved. Like the less fortunate children that Gary helped give a Christmas party.
We knew Gary as a family man, who did everything for his family. Not a day went by that he didn’t talk about his children. He beamed when he talked about his family, he was so proud. He told us how Anne was his bestest buddy (and he truly meant it), he said there was nothing that they couldn’t discuss and he enjoyed her company more than anyone else’s. He told us how Robert (Scooter) is a sensitive and wonderful boy, who Gary wanted to provide with the best education. He told us about Nicole (Nicki) and her strength, which Gary said she got from her mother. Gary loved to take his family out to eat at nice restaurants and he was so proud of his children’s similar enjoyment for good food. Gary was so happy to receive the little things, letters from his daughter telling him how proud she is to be his daughter and the days that he could go fishing or bike riding with his son.
As we sit around a table sharing memories and stories, more than we can ever count, we laugh and sometimes we well up with tears. One officer recalls a funny story from the Republican National Convention. The detail had to line up along the street in order to redirect the protestors onto the sidewalk. As the protestors were passing, one was screaming right in Gary’s face. Gary leaned down, calmly but sternly, with stick in hand and said, “Hey Cuz, this ain’t Seattle.” The same officer also recalls a time when Gary helped a former officer, who had a stroke get a good job. Gary barely knew the officer. This is Gary’s legacy. We will never forget how good of friend Gary was, how compassionate and caring he was. Another member of the squad remembers how Gary gave her toys for her two small sons. One of us remembers a time when she needed something for her children that seemed almost unobtainable, until the problem was presented to Gary. He told her that he wouldn’t stop until she got what she was looking for, and sure enough it only took a few weeks and she got what Gary promised. There are countless stories like this about Gary. All are stories of friendship, humor, fun, compassion, patience, and a passion for service. He never forgot the little things about each and every one of us. He always took the time to show that he cared, even about the little things. Anybody who had the pleasure of knowing Gary, knows this and certainly has there own stories to tell. He always made everyone feel like they were what was most important at the time. He had a gift, a knack for it. He had a tough and gruff exterior, but he was a teddy bear underneath. He could read people and he knew how to make people feel special.
Gary exemplified what it meant to be a police officer and he set the standard as a Community Relations Officer. There’s that line in most evaluations that says that he was asset to the district and the department. Gary was an asset and all who worked with him and knew him were truly blessed. A man’s legacy says a lot about him and I cannot express to you in words the legacy of love, family, duty, honor, piety, kindness, friendship, and brotherhood that this hero leaves behind.
On May 9, 2006 a wife lost an adoring husband, two children lost a dedicated and loving father, the 15th district lost a dear brother and friend, a community lost its most ardent advocate, and this great city lost a son.
We love him, we miss him, and he will be in our hearts always,

To the Skerski Family (Officer Skerski's wife, his children, his parents, and his siblings)and to the Philadelphia Police Department:
I do not know Officer Skerski but my heart breaks for all of you. My thoughts and prayers have been with you all during this past difficult week. I have cried with you each time I heard or saw news about Officer Skerski. I come from a family of Firemen and Policemen. My Dad was a Philadelphia Firemen and so was one of my brothers. I have two other brothers who are currently Philadelphia Policemen. I am saying this because I believe when you have police and firefighters in the family, you are connected to the entire family of both departments. When one of the family hurts, we all hurt. Feeling this hurt, I just had to express my sympathy to the entire Skerski family and Police Department. You are all in a tremendous amount of pain - wife, children, siblings, police officers, and his dear parents - no parent should have to bury one of their children. All I can say is Gary will always remain in your hearts. Talk about him always - share your memories of him with each other. And do not hesitate to cry - tears are a good release. You all have lost a wonderful family man, and I know the pain is just awful. The Police Department and the City have lost a great Police Officer. It is obvious that Officer Skerski was well loved and respected. It is being demonstrated in the outpouring of love and support from our city and elsewhere. Everyone is hurt and touched by the death of Officer Skerski. My thoughts and prayers will be with all of you. I will continue to pray each day for the safety of all Police Officers and Firefighters in our City. May God hold the entire Skerksi Family close to His Heart as you all walk through these difficult months together.

May this bring some comfort to Gary's family.
My Dearest Family,
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above. Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight. Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night. That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through, God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on. I need you here badly; you're part of my plan. There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight. God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears. But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er. I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb; but together we can do it by taking one day at a time. It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too... that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain." And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile, knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind; I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free, remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Skerski Family,
My family and I wish to express our deepest sympathy to you for your loss. There are no words to describe what you must be feeling, but I hope you take comfort in the outpouring of love and support you have received during this most difficult time. Though we live a few blocks down from you and know many of your neighbors, we did not have the fortune of knowing you. From what people are saying, your family is truly wonderful. I was a passerby during the funeral and was in awe. How amazing to see the response from the police department, the city and most importantly, your neighbors and friends. There seems to be a void in the neighborhood, it feels so solemn. Please know that your family is in our prayers!

To the Entire Skerski family. I want you to know that I share your loss. My father was also a police officer who was killed the line of duty 16 years ago on October 23 1989 (Albert Valentino). I never had the chance to meet my father. My mother was 9 months pregnant when he was killed.I was born only a few days after his funeral. I know your pain. Our fathers made the ultimate sacrafice and they are heros. I know that it is not fair but this was their call in life. But leave yourself with this..if it is any help at all, Remember the good times that you got to share with him and how much he adored the two of you. May you find some kind of comfort in the future and be there for your mom. I know my mom still misses my dad. It is something that will never go away for her. My brother Albert had to take over as the man of the house when he was only about 10 years old. But he is what I consider to be my father figure. Spend time together and remember life is to short to have sibling rivalry. And always always be there for your mom. She is gonna need you two for a long time to follow...I can't stress that enough. If I had one wish it would be to meet my dad. I feel like I do know him though. Growing up my mom, my brother and especially my mom-mom would tell me endless stories about him. May god be with all of you in this time of your loss. I hope that you all find comfort in some way right now. My prayers will always be with you all.

To the Skerski Family and his extended family, the Philadelphia Police force, I send my thoughts and prayers to you this day of Officer Skerski burial. I am a Port richmond resident whom as I drove through the streets this morning could feel the loss of a wonderful man. To see the sea of blue on Allegheny Ave, you could not help but feel the sense of loss all his family is feeling. My daughter and I both had lumps in our throat. We both said we wish we could be there to give our condolences to the family of a man we didnt know, but who touched so many and even by his death is(I have heard so much good of him) and will continue to do so.
I know the loss of parents and my heartfelt sorrow goes to his children and to his wife my heart breaks and I am truly sorrow.

To the family of Gary, I came to know Gary through my husband Norman Haigh. I had a situation at my place of business with a problem 18yr. old boy. My husband ask Gary to help me out, and of course he did!!! He arrived every day in uniform, for 1 week, while I opened up to make sure I was OK. After that we ran into Gary at many functions and he always remembered my name. My husband just saw him directing traffice outside Brown school, and made plans to meet for lunch after the election. As the daughter of a retired Phila Police Inspector, William J. Pawley, we are sadden by his tragic death. Out thoughts & prayers are with you now, & on those most difficult days to come. Don't think of him as gone, his journey's just begun. Think of him as living in the hearts of those he touched. Especially ours. Karen & Norman Haigh

My daughter Caitlin plays soccer with Nicole, which is how I met Gary. It was obvious on the sidelines what kind of guy he was. Always a positive comment....a pat on the back....a cheer.....a clap of the hands...he was always a one-man rooting section for the entire team. That positive attitude was obvious when I saw him with his family at games, and apparently carried into his duties as a Philadelphia Police Officer as well.
When I told Caitlin, she asked me if Nikki's dad was a hero. Even though I didn't know him as well as others, I could honestly answer her with a "Yes", in many, many different ways.
Ann, Robert an Nicole, as well as your entire family, you have our deepest, most sincere sympathies, and our prayers

I only knew Gary for a short time, but he was a great man. Without question he helped me in my time of need and asked nothing in return. He will be greatly missed.

May 11th,
Dear Anne and family,
I was so pained in reading about the death of your wonderful husband/father.
Please accept my condolences. Yesterday I talked about Gary and all of you his greiving family at the Mass I presided over here at St. Johns. He and all of you are being remembered in our prayers.
May your faith and the healing hand of Jesus touch and in time heal your wounded hearts.
And for Gary:
May the Lord bless him and
keep him.
May the Lord let his face
shine upon him and be
gracious to him.
May the Lord look upon him
kindly and give him peace.

I couln't believe it was you when I heard a police officer was shot and killed. I haven't seen you since we were younger and hung on opposite corners at memphis and clearfield. Then someone applied for a job with a company I was working for and called you as a reference. And we still remembered each other and you told me how much you liked your work. My heart goes out to your family, You touched more people than I think you could of ever imagined. You were a hero, and will be missed by many.

My heartfelt sympathy to the entire Skerski Family and the Brotherhood of the 15th Police District. It was an honor and pleasure to work with Gary over the years both in the Legislative District Office and in my capacity as President of NEVS. He truly was a Wonderful Man,a Man of Action. He cared about neighborhoods and people as if he knew them all personally for years. May he find Peace with the Angels as that is his brotherhood in eternity for he is truly an Angel. May God Bless You and Give you PEACE.
