September 5, 2012

This is the obituary that i had hoped would have been published but due to logistics it did not appear in any paper.
"Our family and lour lives will never be the same" On Friday evening, August 10, 2012, the earthly suffering of George Hatton ended and his spirit was lifted to eternal comfort abd peace. George died encompassed by the love of his family.
Born and raised in "South Philly", George met and married the love of his life, Joan in April 1955. In the years to follow he became "Dad" to his four children, Margie (Larry Breault), Jeanie (Peter Powell), George (Theresa) and Tom (Frances) and then became "pop" to his eleven grandchildren, Peter, Christine, Jackie, Kristopher, George, Elizabeth, Daniel, Joseph, Natalie, Veronica and the late Tommy and his one great-grandchild, Kamryn.
George's family was always the priority in his life. His love was felt as soon as you were in his presence. Family and friends knew George to be a man of strong faith, great character, generous spirit and he lived his life to the fullest.
George served on the Philadelphia Police Dept for 22 1/2 years and retired as a detective in 1979. He was also formerly employed at Methodist Hospital as Director of Security and finally was a part of the Phillies Security.
In his life in the community, he enjoyed New Year's day as a mummer over a span of many years. He also served as a committee man for the 26th Ward of the Republican party. At the time of his death, he was an associate member of the Korean War Vets Chapter 1509, a member of St. Richard's Senior Citizens and actively involved in Southeast Catholic Class of '52 reunion committee.
All those who loved and cared for George are invited to share in his life's celebration.

Eulogy to my Dad

Touched – that describes my families feelings these past days! Everyone has been so supportive and comforting. The one thing in this life that you can count on is the love of your family and friends.
Thank You from the bottom of our hearts! You will always be in our prayers!
Endless Love – That's our Dad, husband, grandpop, family, friend, co-worker, neighbor, teammate, classmate. Some of you know him only as Sonny.
Our dad's love extended to everyone he met. He was never too busy or too tired! He just did what he needed, to be there for you!
Leader – That's Dad – From his boyhood days at the National Guard demonstrating dismantling weapon use on TV. He then became a Philadelphia Police Officer and Detective. President of Home & School Association, Holy Name Society, Boy Scouts, Pollock Street Strutter's New Years, Republican Committeeman, City Council Candidate, South End Town Watch organizer, Bregy Softball League president
Mentor – He would spend hours talking to you about anything that was important to you – sports, politics, your faith. Countless people have told me that some decisions that they made in their lives, were based on their chats with my Dad.
Warmth – My Dad made everyone feel welcome by his smile, handshake and hugs. Why, because he meant them!!!
Athlete – my Dad participated in many sports – Softball, Bowling, Darts were among his favorites. What made him special was the conversations before, during and after the competitions. They often lasted longer the game itself.
Finally – it was his love of his family! My dad wanted only the best for all of us all the time! When we were happy, he was happy. When we were saddened, he cried with us. He always put our family before his well being – even when he was struggling with his own health issues. He took care of my mom and protected and lover her unconditionally for 57 years of marriage. My Mom being the ace that she is – also took very good care of him!
So on behalf of My Mom Joan, my sister Margie and Jeanie, my brother Tommy and myself, I say to you dad – You made a difference in so many lives throughout your life and just thinking of you going forward, you'll make a difference in many more lives forever. God Bless You and keep You Safe! Please watch over everyone and guide us – We Love You DAD!

Mrs. Hatton, Tommy and family, My love and prayers on the loss your husband and Dad. I taught Tommy in 1st Grade at St. Richard's. A precious moment for me was the Children's mass on Sunday morning. Every Sunday Mr. Hatton would bring Tommy to my pew and before the homily I would walk Tommy back because he was crying so hard for his Dad. Well, I know Tommy is a grown man but this weekend I have felt his tears again as I read about your great loss. There is a loving God who is holding Mr. Hatton gently in His arms. May you find comfort in our prayers for you. God bless. Sister Marlene Daltwas IHM (aka Sister Anna Mary)

Dear Aunt Joan and Cousins,

Uncle George (Sonny) was a true patriarch of the family. Even though I didn't see him much, his firm handshake and warm greeting always made me feel great. I feel privileged to have known him throughout my entire lifetime. My first thought at any Phillies game was to find him and say hello. It was also wonderful that my wife and son's got to know him as well during your trips to Harleysville. He will be dearly missed but his strength will be with you all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

My deepest condolences go to each and every one of you. I am so happy that you guys have taken me into your family and loved me like your own. Just like Pop did, he loved me like his own granddaughter. I will miss his great bear hugs and unforgettable smile.

To Pop -
I promise to keep Georgie in line. I wish you could have seen us walk down the isle one day. But you better believe when we have kids one day and it's a boy. He will be carrying the name on. I love you Pop and miss you.

Love you Hatton family.. I'm here for you guys.

I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with George at Methodist Hospital. What a wonderful human being. I also met some of you at the July 4th celebrations up Carlisle Street. My brother-in-law Bobby lived there before his sudden death. I remember George comforting me at that time. George went straight to heaven. He was a loving, giving man. I hope that you all find comfort in the good that he did on earth and will continue to do in heaven. God needed a very special angel.

Our brother in law and our friend A family man. A hero as a policeman. A pillar of the community. A Christian. Someone we are honored to ever be close to. Loved and respected he helped hold our family together and will be sorely missed. He left a legacy for us all through his loving children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They can carry on his tradition of caring for each other as he cared for them. We rejoice in the new spiritual life he has with Jesus. We mourn our loss; but 1 Corinthians 15 tells us of his glorious eternal future. Until we all meet again;rest well.

Don't worry about Joan, you have some caring sons and daughters who will take care of her. God bless you.

Pop, you have been the man I've tried to model myself after for as long as I can remember. You have touched the lives of so many people who knew you and brought more smiles than anyone could count. There was no such thing as a "stranger" to you...everyone was a friend even if they were just meeting you for the first time. I hope and pray that one day I can make my own grandchildren as proud of me as we all are of you. I love you, Pop.

Grandpop George was a true gentleman amongst gentlemen and he was the most honest, loving, caring, supportive grandpop in the whole world. He came to every sports game that i was involved in that he could and cheered me on through it all. My Poppy was the kindest person I ever met and touched the hearts of everyone he encountered. I am going to miss him so much and I'm sure I'm saying the same for everyone else because there is nothing not to miss about Poppy. I love you pop and I know you are watching over me. Rest in peace Pop!

He touched my heart just as my own grandfather did. I know you're watching over the family & I. I'm going to miss you so much Pop, rest easy Buddy xoxo

Grandpop George was the reason for my name. I proudly carry my name and tell everyone that I share the same name as one of the most amazing, caring, loving, protecting, influential people in the world and that man is my grandfather. For anyone who ever crossed paths with him he went out of his way to make you feel like he has known you for years. Every time he saw you he would be so excited like you haven't seen him forever even though you just saw him the day before. His hugs were were so warm and genuine that anyone who has ever received knows the love and care that goes in to each one. My grandfather taught me the game of baseball that I have grown to love and respect more and more because of his wisdom and knowledge. He was my best friend and my biggest fan and the sidelines will look a little lonely without him now. So for anyone who has ever met my grandfather just know that he loved you as one of his own. For anyone who ever needed a role model or someone to talk to he was there and always will be. If there is one thing you can say about George Joseph Hatton Jr., Sonny, Dad, Grandpop, Uncle, Great grandpop, is that he was a man who lived. You will always be in my heart Pop!

Dad - You are the BEST FATHER anyone could ever have! I'll take care of Mommy!

August 14, 2012

Sonny Hatton was an influential man during my young life and a friend through the rest of it. When someone chooses a career in law enforcement, there is an unspoken connection to the positive role models in their lives, especially those who wore the badge before them. Deep down, we know they are proud of our choice to serve in law enforcement and we strive to earn and maintain that pride as long as we are on the job - as long as we live. I always thought of Sonny this way and always will. It is a very special brotherhood. I had inside access to Sonny by growing up with his nephew Jim Brady. He always looked after our entire group with his warmth, acceptance, openness, and quiet strength; he never 'lorded it over us' or talked down to us; he genuinely enjoyed our company, privately corrected our courses and encouraged the best from each of us. In response to his example, I know I wanted to live up to his affection and expectation. He was the kind of man that inspired me to be still in his presence, in order to just watch, listen and learn from him. It was also significant to see how completely and openly his wife Joan and his children loved him. Sadly, the word hero is overused and too often misapplied today but Sonny Hatton was a true hero in my life and will ever remain so. I may not be the man I am today without his subtle yet significant influence. I never shared my feelings or appreciation with him in words but I believe he knew it in my smile, my handshake and my deference whenever I was in his presence. The world is a more diminished place without him now but in Sonny's case, the benefits of his character - his love - continue to affect so many of us, directing us to all that is good.
