HERBERT ODELL Obituary

ODELL HERBERT Tax Lawyer, Dies at 83 A widely-known and celebrated tax lawyer, died peacefully on July 18, 2021 in Austin, Texas, where he had been living for the past 5 years. He was 83 years old and had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease for a number of years. During the last five years of his struggle with this debilitating disease, he was attended to by his son, Lev Baesh, Lev's spouse, Andrew Martin, by two of his other children, Jon and Jamie, and his brother, Stuart. Mr. Odell was a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of Beta Alpha Si, the honorary accounting society, the University of Miami School of Law where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review, and Harvard University Law School, where he received a LLM in International Tax Law. He was a member of the Florida and Pennsylvania Bars and was admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the U.S. District Courts. His first job out of law school was with the Tax Division of the Department of Justice in Washington, DC, where he honed his skills as a tax litigator. He thereafter practiced law in Miami for several years before moving back to his native Philadelphia where he joined Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and remained for 20 years before leaving to form a tax boutique with several other lawyers. Mr. Odell spent the 10 years preceding his retirement in 2017 with the Houston-based law firm of Chamberlain Hrdicka, for which he established and ran a Pennsylvania-based office that specialized in domestic and international tax matters. Mr. Odell, who was married and divorced twice, is survived by his three sons from his first marriage, a son and daughter from his second marriage, five grandchildren and a brother. His passing will be celebrated at a private memorial service for immediate family only.
