David and I were fortunate to purchase a home next door to Ed and Marline in 1989. Over the years we shared the love of gardening as well as neighborly friendship. Ed and I loved to prune shrub together and Marline tasking me with assuring he didn't over do it. It was ironic that Ed and David were both majors and minors in math and physics but it made for them periodically putting their heads together. A gentleman always. We can be comforted in knowing that Ed and Marline are once again together on to their next journey. Our prayers are with the family as we just learned of his passing today.

Thank you all for your lovely memories of our dad. We are incredibly proud of all he accomplished and he truly valued and appreciated the world of applied and industrial mathematics.

I just saw today March24 that Ed passed away in February. I met Ed during the organization of the first ICIAM meeting in Paris in 1987. I liked working with him. He was a very nice man with a strong commitment to SIAM.
His family must be proud of what he accomplished for the Applied Mathematics community.

Today, March 9, 2015, I heard for the first time of the death in January of one of my oldest and most cherished friends and the previous death of his beloved Marline. Ed and I met for the first time in the early 1960s during the first ever book exhibit at a SIAM meeting. I was a recently minted acquisitions editor in charge of mathematical publishing for a prestigious science publisher. Ed had a keen interest in the role of publication of applied mathematics and shared with me his wide knowledge of the literature and its future aspirations. From that time until my retirement, any visit to Philadelphia was blessed by Ed and Marline with a most pleasant overnighter. Conversation with Ed was always packed with constructive ideas and insights. He was instrumental in enriching my professional life. I have missed him in recent years and regret that our aging and geographical distance so seldom allowed those gatherings to continue. My deep condolences to the families of both Ed and Marline, whose demise must have been hard to bear. They were both loved by many.

Ed was an extraordinary and memorable man. We first met when he put his energies behind a scholarship fund in memory of his Haverford College mathematics professor, Cletus Oakley. I was a faculty member and Treasurer at Haverford. Later Ed asked me to be the 2nd Treasurer of SIAM and we worked closely on the affairs of the association he created and loved. What was so admirable about Ed was his unwavering commitment to SIAM and its members and programs. He was filled with ideas and enthusiasms and his energy was infectious. What is so remarkable is that today, at a time when allegiance to so many professional societies is waning, SIAM continues to attract and retain devotees. Ed created a culture of friendship and loyalty which endures and which now serves a worldwide community of mathematicians and computer scientists. Those of us fortunate enough to work closely with Ed were inspired by his devotion. I will miss him, . Sam Gubins
