JANICE KENNY Obituary

KENNY
JANICE MARIE (Schmidt), Ph. D.

age 92, was the Executive Director of the Care Connection in Philadelphia, PA. A clinical psychologist, she was one of the first twenty five women to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania's Ph.D. program. Jan grew up in Zanesville, Ohio. She was the daughter of the owner of a bowling alley/pool hall in the age of The Depression, it was her dad who fostered her entrepreneurial spirit.
At the age of 8, her brother taught her how to spell Psychology and later taunted her about how she could spell it but didn't' know what it meant. Once she found out, she never looked back.
Jan was a scholar, even her children were surprised by the many degrees she collected. She finished her undergraduate degree at Ohio Wesleyan University and went on to get her B.A. in chemistry at University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), B.S. in Psychology at St. Lawrence University, M.A. in Educational Psychology from Temple University, M.S. in Experi-mental Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and, finally, her Ph.D. in clinical Psychology from The University of Pennsylvania. Some career highlights include a stint as secretary for the Mayor's office of Zanesville, Ohio, teaching associate in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, Research Psycho-logist at the Philadelphia State Hospital. However, her true passion was as the founder and director of the Northeast Psychological Clinic (now Care Connection) for over 55 years.
She was also an active volunteer serving as President of the Philadelphia Society of Clinical Psychologists, President as well as Treasurer of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association and Treasurer of the PPA. She also founded the non-profit educational organi-zation Continuing Education Abroad which she ran for 23 yrs.
One of her passions was the stock market - she ran two successful investment clubs aptly named Quick Buck and Fast Buck investment clubs. She never tired of telling you what she thought the next big thing was.
She was married for over 50 years to Ben Kenny who died in 2015. People said they never knew a couple who laughed more. Jan is survived by her four children: Linda Hobkirk of Southampton, NJ; Dr. Steven Hobkirk of Lebanon, PA, Charlotte Morello of Wilton, CT and Susan Borden of Yardly, PA as well as her six grandchildren Melissa Hobkirk of Denver, CO, Jessica Hobkirk of Wormleysburg, PA, Dr. Andrea Hobkirk of Hershey, PA, Dan Borden of Madison, WI, Meredith Morello of Salt Lake City, UT and Matthew Morello of Wilton, CT.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday March 24, 2017 at the KIRK AND NICE CHAPEL AT SUNSET MEMORIAL PARK, 331-338 County Line Road in Feasterville, PA. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to your favorite charity.
