Jerry Berndt Obituary

Berndt Jerry Born May 11th, 1938 in Toledo, Ohio, Jerry Lee Berndt ("Coach") died on Sunday, December 4th, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia ("Pat"), his three children, Jodie Etter, Jamie (Eric Wojcikiewicz), and Jeff (Cheryl); his sisters Patricia Hedges and Sandra Wozniak; and his grandchildren, Brock Benson (Jennifer), Josh Benson (Charissa), Abby Thomas (James), Ian (Mary), Ali, Marisa, and Keira Wojcikiewicz, and Sadie Berndt, and 10 great-grandchildren. Jerry was a devoted husband and father, an adoring grandfather and great-grandfather, and a passionate teacher and coach. He met his wife Pat in 1953 when they were freshman in high school, and they married in 1959. Throughout their nearly 70 years together, Pat and Jerry proved the existence of soul mates. The life of a coach can be difficult, but with Pat by his side Jerry handled the ups and downs with his trademark smile intact. Jerry attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS), lettering in football, basketball, wrestling, tennis, and track (for which he was voted All-Conference in 1959). He was inducted into the UWS Athletic Hall of Fame in '86. Jerry transferred to Bowling Green State University, graduating in '62. Jerry began his career as a high school assistant football coach and biology teacher while finishing his Masters Degree at the University of Toledo. After becoming head coach at Streetsboro High School in 1970, he went to Dartmouth College in '71 as assistant football and wrestling coach. In '79, he became head football coach at DePauw University (going from 2-7 his first year to 7-2-1 his second). Following this success, he took over as head coach at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in '81, where another big turnaround was in order. Going from 1-9 his first year to 7-3 in '82, Penn won their first Ivy League Championship (co-champions) in 23 years, and Jerry won Ivy League Coach of the Year. Following another co-championship in '83, the Quakers claimed sole possession of the Ivy League Championship in '84 and '85. These teams ushered in the Penn Championship Era that continues to this day; Jerry was inducted into the Penn Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014. Two "Owls" programs followed: Rice University ('86-'88, head coach and Athletic Director)), and Temple University ('89-'92, head coach). In '90, Temple recorded the biggest turnaround in college football, going from 1-10 the previous year to 7-4. Finally, at the University of Missouri, he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, with bowl appearances in '97 and '98. Jerry is remembered by former players, coaches, and students as a man who was as warm as he was strong; a mentor who left an indelible mark on everyone lucky enough to call him coach. In retirement, Jerry and Pat moved to Naperville, Illinois, where his long-standing love of golf blossomed; when they landed in Hilton Head Island, SC, he could finally play the links all year round. Jerry loved the good-natured competition, the opportunity to encourage the best in others, and speeding his way through the first 18 so he could play another. His favorite boast was about playing more rounds of golf than there are days in the year. Jerry also spent his retirement cheering on his grandchildren, and took special delight in taking his loved ones out for dinner - the reservation always under "Coach." Until the end, his loved ones knew just where to find him on game days: in his favorite chair, next to his beloved wife, watching the sport that helped make him the man he was. Jerry's family, friends, players, and fellow coaches will remember him as a man with an unshakable, positive spirit, belief in good things to come, and unique ability to make people feel special. They will remember his devotion to his family and his goals, and his admirably infectious pride in his story. He will always be profoundly missed, and loved in death as he was in life. A memorial celebration of Jerry's life will be held on Hilton Head Island, SC in February, and in Philadelphia, PA in September. You can visit Jerry's memorial page at The Island Funeral Home of Hilton Head's website for details as they are determined. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made in Jerry's name to First Tee of the Lowcountry (https://firstteelowcountry.org), or the WGA Evans Scholars Foundation (https://wgaesf.org ) islandfuneralhome.com

Coach interviewed me for the Head Basketball Coach position at Rice. I was amazed at what he had accomplished as the Football Coach & Athletic Director! I saw his facilities, what his competition had in the Southwest Conference and was awed. I was so impressed that I didn't know if I could do the same? I wanted to work for him, but and knew he was a special coach and man. I ran into him again at Dolphin Head golf course on HHI. He looked frail, but was very upbeat and everyone called him Coach! I wish I could have had more time to enjoy his stories and company.

I think I may have already commented but I´m
Going again. Jerry and I shared an office back in `71. He loved to laugh and I was victim to his laughter many times. He loved coaching and his family very much. YomPatricia and the family, my most sincere condolences.

I had decided to not play football my senior year at Streetsboro until Coach came to the farm to visit me. He respected my choice but he still asked me to reconsider. As he became my coach he taught me to think differently about life and people. As a former missionary and now a pastor he taught me to invite people to follow Jesus without judging them. Thank you Coach for your impact that has changed my life and the lives of many you will never know.

Jerry was my first office mate at Dartmouth. He and his wife Patricia were very nice to me & my wife Carla. We followed one another through coaching moves and JERRY OFFERED ME A JOB WHEN HE WENT TO RICE. It was sad to learn of his passing. Condolences to Patricia and his children!

The Coach meant the world to me and my family. Like so many others he gave us an opportunity to go to a great school. Little did I know that the most important part of my education was football and the man who coached it. He was a roll model for all that played for him. Being Captain for his 4th straight Ivy League Championship was more than I could have ever dreamed of. He was tough, fair, principled and a great family man. Later in life he became my friend and golf partner. He never stopped coaching me to "get your putts to the hole" or to be early for our tee times. His legacy is far too great for one paragraph. I will miss him but never forget him.

Hard to say goodbye to someone I considered my best friend. We grew up together, living across the street from each other in Toledo, Ohio. I will always remember having the honor of being best man when he and the love of his life, Pat married. In 1959, Jerry and I left Toledo for the University of Wisconsin, Superior to continue our athletic venture. Jerry flourished, becoming in many ways one of a kind. A unique man with unusual talents that later inspired many along the way. What a legacy!!! I miss him as a brother and pray that he rests in peace. My wife and I offer sincere condolences to his wife Pat and all the family.

Coach Berndt gave me the opportunity to attend Penn as a student athlete . As a player from suburban Philadelphia, I was able to play in front of family and friends for 4 years at Franklin Field. Your legacy will always be linked to the magical run of Penn Football in the early 1980´s to present day. RIP Coach.

Jerry and I were good friends growing up. We were inducted into the Waite High School Athletic Hall of Fame on the same evening. Condolences to the family.

I was a student manager at Temple University working with Coach for 3 years. Coach Berndt always treated everyone with the utmost class and respect. He was one of the kindest men I have ever met. The world is a far lesser place with Coach Berndt.

I coached for Jerry at Rice and Temple and coached against him when he was at Missouri. I coached in college for over fifty years and I never worked for a head coach that showed me more respect and dignity than Jerry did. He knew how to treat people. We have lost a good man in Jerry Berndt.

Dear Pat and Family,
Burrell and I were very sad to learn of Coach's passing. He was a fixture at Dolphin Head Golf Club where he could regularly be seen playing multiple holes of golf. He was a wonderful, kind man, full of good humor. When he'd see me, he'd ask me, not Burrell, if he could have a lesson. He came to Dartmouth as assistant coach just after the year my brother, a football player, had graduated. Coach had an impressive career and clearly was well loved and respected. We will miss him. We send our love and sympathy to you and all your family.

I worked with Jerry at both Dartmouth and UPenn. He was great to work with both as a boss and a human being. Thank you Jerry for having faith in me and may you rest in peace (with a golf bag of course)
