Dr Gartland was a Giant of Orthopaedics and I spent time in his office sipping strong coffee and chatting about the history of ortho, as well as, his substantial contributions to ortho literature and research, especially wrist fractures. He was a wealth of knowledge and I am sure the ortho community there misses him as I do. Dr Gartland is a man you dont talk to; you listen to him, because he enlarges your mind. He will be missed sorely by many people, including me.

God blessed all who knew this kind thoughtful gentle man.
His medical accomplishments speak for volumes iterated by all.
His fairness and judgements in his everyday situations is a testament to his goodness. He is a very important man in my life and many others for many reasons. I speak of him to my children an colleauges when role models and outstanding individuals come to mind. The world is a much better place being blessed by this mans existence. He is now welcomed home by the angels and the good Lord for a job well done.

I met Dr. Gartland in 1985 as a new staff member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Although he was a past president, he had become chairman of my main committee, the Communications Committee. At a board meeting my second day on the job, he and I chatted about a discussion on the agendawhether the NIH would consider creating an intramural program in musculoskeletal research. Hoping it was true that there is no such thing as a dumb question, I gulped and asked what an intramural program was. He was kind. It's Latin. Intrawithin. Muralthe walls. It's a research program actually within the walls of the NIH, not one like we have now, spread out among numerous universities and medical centers. It's a sign that the NIH values the work enough to have a program within the walls. We had a wonderful relationship for many years and every time I was in Philadelphia I tried to meet him for lunch or dinner. One time, when he was about 85, he said he could do lunch but it would have to be later, maybe 1:00 pmbecause he had a tennis game at 10:30! He loved writing and editing and he taught me many thingsI was flattered when he asked me to look at a few chapters of his book on medical writing. He was always on top of big issues facing the Academy and he was a wonderful gentleman in the many, many things he did for us at AAOS, and for orthopaedic surgeons and their patients throughout the country.

To Madelyn and the Gartland family, we send our sincere condolences on the loss of your father. We remember Dr. Gartland as a kind and gentle man who, many years ago, hosted in his office a small group of children who were "resting" between games during a basketball tournament not far away. It was a magical day for us and almost 60 years later we still remember the wonderful hospitality shown to us that afternoon. Fran McLaughlin Krumbiegel (Villanova, PA) Patty Gallagher Magnus (Houston, TX) and Mary Contole Celebre (Cape May, NJ) wish to convey our deepest sympathy to you. May he rest in peace.

All of us who trained under Dr Gartland know of his many accomplishments and honors. As his resident I appreciated his a dedication to teaching and skill as a teacher, his humor, and his fairness. Most of all I remember with gratitude his kindness and that he cared about us all as individuals. It is sad that h;e is gone.

I had the privilege and honour to work under Dr. John J. Gartland as a resident and afterwards teach students and residents alongside Dr. Gartland when he assumed Chairmanship of the Department. He will be missed greatly for providing guidance and encouragement to so many of us.

Dr.Gartland's legacy will forever be characterized by his many selfless contributions. He will be missed.

There are many valuable lessons I learned from John Gartland as his first Senior Resident in Orthopaedics at Jefferson 1970-71. After all these years his teachings continue to positively influence my care of patients. Dr. Gartland directly and indirectly improved the lives of thousands of individuals in his long and illustrious career. He truly left mankind better off than when he came into this world. It is a privilege to have known him as a mentor and friend. Mark D Brown, M.D., PhD. Jefferson 1965

I didn't have the opportunity to work for Dr. Gartland when he was the Chairman of Orthopaedics but I heard such great things about him through the faculty and staff when I came on board. He was a great teacher, mentor and surgeon. On behalf of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Jefferson I want to express my condolences to his family and friends.

This patriarch, in every sense of that word, influenced four generations of "family" through his love, service, generosity, diligence, writings - his example for his own family, his large extended family, his colleagues at Jefferson Medical College, his residents and medical students, the community of Orthopaedic Surgery at large, and his church. All benefited from knowing him.
I am happy to include myself in this fortunate group. At this time of year when families gather, we say, "Thank you, John."

On this day of giving thanks, it is only right to think back to the reality that without JG, the path travelled would have been less enjoyable, less productive and less important. I continue to be proud that I was a Gartland resident.
Rest in Peace, my friend.

JG was my mentor from my beginning in ortho surgery as a resident and young faculty member at Jefferson. The department flourished under his leadership. Jefferson Ortho Alumni annual meeting success was a testament to his leadership and the respect we all had for JG. He was a fine, caring physician who did much for the many of us he selected and educated.

And of course he could not have done this all without Louise Lang!!

I first met Dr. Gartland through my cousin, Louise Lang. He always chatted with me whenever I stopped into the office at Jefferson. My family knew him since we were young: he fixed some of our problem legs when we were children. My mom typed one of the manuscripts for his book. When I was graduating from high school, he wrote a letter of recommendation for me to attend Jefferson: I have been employed at Jefferson for 38 years . He was a gentleman and caring physician who will be remembered by many for his contributions to medicine and education. May he Rest In Peace.

JJG was admired and respected by his peers, faculty, residents and students at Jefferson and the Orthopaedic Community nationally and internationally.
I first met JJG when I started my career in Orthopaedic Nursing in 1953 and later was fortunate to be hired by him in 1954 and spent the rest of my career as his nurse and administrative assistant. It was a joy to work for him. He always said we worked with him, not for him. He was an educator but more importantly a gentleman.

JJG was a kind and generous man who will be missed. Rest In Peace, good friend.

Dr. Garland was a fine gentleman, in the truest sense. A regular attendee at the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society meetings, it was a privilege to get to know him. His legacy follows in so many ways. Professionally, aside from the numerous positions he held, such as President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, his orthopedic residents and fellows and the multitude of patients whom he treated serve as legacies to this humble, decent man. We are grateful to have had him share so much of his near-century of life with us. Thank you, Dr. Gartland.

God bless his good hearted, kind and compassionate soul. Truly one of the class acts of our lifetime. God bless the whole family. He can now be united with God, Sara, Barbara, and Madeline. I'm glad for all he made them wait....
