JOSEPH THOMAS "Hot Dog", 85 years old, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully at Holy Redeemer Hospice Center on January 31, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Joseph was born in Philadelphia on September 16, 1930 to Loretta (Rosney) and Francis Daly.
Joseph is preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Helen (nee Walsh); his brothers, Francis, John, Vincent, and Edward (Brother Theodore, OCSO); and his sisters, Sara, Catherine, and Veronica.
He is survived by his children, Joseph Jr. (Trish), Michael (Diane), and Linda Caruso (Vincent); grandchildren, Scott Daly, Andrea Gubicza (Matthew), Meghan Costa (James), Sean Daly, Kelsey Caruso, and Cayli Caruso; as well as two great-grandchildren, Matthew Gubicza and Rosemary Gubicza. Joseph is also survived by his longtime friend and companion, Marion Shetzline.
Joseph graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in 1948. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 15, 1952 and was assigned to the U.S. Navy submarine program in New London, CT. On January 8, 1956 he was honorably discharged with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After returning from the service, he was hired by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. Joseph was stationed in the Port Richmond center for the majority of his career. After 38 years of dedicated service, he retired. He was a devout Catholic and parishioner of Nativity B.V.M. Parish in Port Richmond as well as a member of the North Wildwood Elks, Madison Athletic Association, and the Putso Athletic Club.
Family and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday, February 4 from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. at Saint Christopher's Church, 13301 Proctor Road, Phila., PA. A Mass of Christian burial will follow. Interment New Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Joseph's memory to the Abbey of the Genesee, 3258 River Road, Piffard, NY 14533.
