Joseph Derham Obituary

DERHAM
JOSEPH S., on Dec. 16, 2007, age 81, a Haddonfield resident since 1953, died of congestive heart failure at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. Mr. Derham grew up in Freeport Long Island and was a graduate of Ursinus College where he earned a BS degree in Chemistry. Mr. Derham is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy Warren Derham, his two sons, Gregory and Thomas, daughter in law, Suzanne, six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Brooke, Mark, Thomas Jackson, Jonathan Matthew, Jesse Kyle and two sisters, Elaine and Gladys. Mr. Derham was predeceased by his son Joseph, Jr. in 1993. Mr. Derham held the position of Senior Vice President with Morgan Stanley. He was employed as an investment manager for 47 years up until his retirement this past June. Mr. Derham was very active in community affairs and for many years served on the town's school board. He was Chairman of the Finance, Athletic, and Curriculum Committee. He oversaw the construction and replacement of the town's Middle School, expansion of the elementary schools, and the addition to the town's high school. Mr. Derham chaired a Board Committee that purchased Scout Field for the school district. In addition, Mr. Derham helped draw up the plan for the development of the Radnor field complex. He served the Little League for twenty years as Trustee, Player Agent, Coach, and Manager and was the treasurer for the Midget Football League for seven years. In addition, he led an effort to expand the Little League complex to include two additional fields. Mr. Derham originated the planning and construction of a Memorial to World War II, Korean, and Vietnam Veterans which is used by the town fathers during Memorial Day services. Mr. Derham was founder and Trustee of The Robert Fulton Memorial Scholarship Fund and has served as Chairman of the Selection Committee. This fund has provided financial assistance to many students all over the South Jersey area. Mr. Derham served his country in the United States Army in the 334th Infantry 84 Division 9th Army and took part in combat in the defense of the Siegfried Line and participated in the Battle of the Bulge where he and his division were awarded the Bronze Star for their actions. He was awarded The Purple Heart for wounds received in that battle. Mr. Derham's family will receive friends Wed. evening from 7- 9 P.M. at KAIN-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 15 WEST END AVE., Haddonfield. His Funeral Mass will follow Thursday morning, 10 A.M., at Christ the King Catholic Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield. Interment will be private. Memorial donations in Mr. Derham's name may be made to the Bobby Fulton Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 14, Haddonfield, NJ 08033.
