1935 - 2022

HILL JOSEPH JOHN 87, of Radnor, PA, died of complications from diabetes on November 24, 2022 with his wife and children by his side. Joe, born in Wilmington, DE, was the son of Mary Louisa (Butcher) and Julian Hill. He attended Wilmington Friends School and graduated from Gov. Dummer Academy in South Byfield, MA in 1953. After attending Swarthmore College, Joe served in the US Army and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1961. With a strong interest in venture capital and service on many small company boards, his career spanned 53 years as a stock-broker in Philadelphia and Conshohocken: beginning with Butcher & Sherrerd; he retired from RBC Dain Rauscher in 2007. He was Chairman of the Board for The Ralston Center and on the Board of the Ralston/Mercy-Douglas House. A long-time board member of The Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Greater Philadelphia Community Development Corporation, he also served on the finance committee of The Girl Scouts of Philadelphia. He was a long-standing member of The Merion Cricket Club, The Rabbit, and the Chester Yacht Club (Nova Scotia) - where he served as Commodore. Gregarious and fun loving, Joe enjoyed sailing, cooking, reading, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth (Libby) Bartlett Hill, sister Louisa Spottswood Coughlin, 3 children: Alexander (Nancy Simonyi), Michael, and Susannah (Brian Doherty) and five grandchildren. Joe was devoted to his family and friends who will miss his personal warmth, sense of humor, and joy. A celebration of life will be held in the new year.
