The McGuire / Fogarty Gym

April 11, 2013

James D. Fogarty of Omaha here with a message for the brothers of Dr. Michael McGuire. First, my wife Colleen is a Wisner NE McGill and thus related to many McGuires. Second, we lived for five years at 307 South 50th Street, Omaha, where Dr. Louis McGuire had built a gymnasium under the backyard. Our children loved playing there as I assume McGuire children did. Our best to surviving family members. I don't know any of you, but we definitely have a connection. I can be reached at [email protected]

Michael was indeed one of my best friends and a mentor. over the past 30+ years of knowing him and his family we have grown to love and respect him and all that he stood for. although after moving to Arizona, we did not see each other as often, we still stayed in touch. my family and I will miss him greatly. he taught me how to be a man, a parent, and a friend, and for that I will never forget him. may he rest in peace. and may the grace of God elimanate the suffering related to his loss that his family is going thru. God bless you all

my Father, hero, mentor, Masterpiece.

My Father

In life when your born, there should be a man in your world, that you should look up to and idolize and admire. It should be a Father. My Father, Dr Michael D McGuire was that man. He was born into a richly cultured family during the Great Depression and rose up to be one of the most prolific psychiatrists of his time, in the field of adopted adolescent psychiatry. He practiced in many hospitals across the country. Always patient, kind, taking time, making sure patients were treated with the best care, respect and love. He was always thinking, finding ways to solve issues, a quiet studious man into the night, he would read always loving life and the medical profession. He dedicated his life to people in the world helping adopted kids and working with them to help them get their lives in the right direction. This man never complained, often was shy, downplayed loads of his achievements, and had three marriages with 3 different wonderful women, adopted and natural kids from all three. Dr Michael McGuire was a force to be reckoned with in the psychiatric profession doing what he loved the most. He will be missed, loved and never forgotten as one of the most adored doctors of today.

Have always admired this McGuire family and all their achievements.....

I was not honored to have met him, but did meet his 3 brothers when they came to a family reunion & they were delightful. My father, Richard P. McGuire, was Dr. McGuire's first cousin & lived with their family part of the time he went to Creighton's law school. He spoke very fondly of those days. We are fortunate to be part of a large, wonderful, witty, loving & very Irish family. Dr. McGuire sounds like a cousin I wish I had known. My heart goes out to the family who will miss him & I pray they find comfort in all the warm memories.

He was unique among the unique, extraordinary in so many ways, and a spirit who impacted my soul deeply. He was a man who not just shared a common family history with me, but allowed me to see, through him, the special gifts that the many generations of my family have fostered and passed to their heirs.
There are few people in the world I would have rather had a conversation with – or a hug from. He would take delight in discussing any subject with those he loved – yet, all the while, protecting some mysterious, hidden, fragile center. He was, without a doubt, one of the fastest and wittiest conversationalists on the planet. With him, you would find yourself deeply immersed in a fascinating subject, only to be brought back to reality in a snap with an amazingly adept humorous turn, an incredibly appropriate pun (how is that possible), or a song you just had to sing along with. What's my idea of a perfect evening? It's sitting across from my uncle, sipping a John Powers, talking through the night. There can't be anything better than spending time with someone you love, exploring the mysteries of life, laughing until it hurts, sharing tears, and, before the night ends, being the recipient of the best bear hug ever. I miss him so much. But, he has become part of me. I would be a different person if we had never met. I would be missing a part of me that I cannot do without. I cherish that part of me. I will pass it on to my son. And, if I do a good job, he will pass it on to his children, and to many future generations. That amazing, unique spirit will not be lost. It's become a part of me, and many others, and it will continue to live on.

Although I had not the pleasure to know Dr. McGuire, just reading his family history, it is only sad to lose such a talent as he, as well as his family.

May his families reap the rewards from all that he did, and all that he was.

May God Bless his memory, and his life of achievements, be his forever rewards.
