Michele LANGER Obituary

LANGER Michele Age 76, of Philadelphia, PA. Died on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. She is survived by her husband, Alan Cohen; daughter, Lara Langer Cohen (John Patrick Leary); granddaughter, Louisa Langer Leary; and four siblings. Michele succumbed to Alzheimer's disease, the cruelest disease possible for a person who loved thinking-cogitating, as she liked to say, which better describes the roving, deliberative quality of her thought. The daughter of an intermittently employed physicist and an artist/school bus driver/scientific illustrator, Michele grew up mostly in Arlington, MA. One of five wildly smart siblings, she was smart in different ways: she didn't share her family's gifts for math, music, or sports, but she was fascinated by people, social structures, and language. Michele went to Bryn Mawr College on a full scholarship. She loved its rituals and its rigor, and it was there that she was set up on a blind date with her future husband, a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, Michele traveled around the U.S. as part of a team evaluating the Office of Equal Opportunity's Legal Services Program, and she subsequently entered University of Chicago Law School. She began her career as a lawyer at Mesirov, Gelman, Jaffe, and Cramer before joining Toll, Ebby, and Gough, eventually becoming a named partner. She was drawn to law because she liked building arguments and solving problems, and of course, she wanted justice done. If the case involved improbable scenarios and characters, so much the better. Michele did not suffer fools gladly, but no one would take you more seriously. She held strong convictions about most things, big and small, and was prepared to argue them indefinitely. It is not the Langer style to have a favorite anything, but she had a wonderful way of relishing particular details of a song, movie, or book, almost always for some reason that would make you see them differently. Having grown up without nice clothes, one of Michele's chief delights, once she became a lawyer, was being able to buy the clothing she wanted. She had tremendous style, and she dressed for herself: when faced with a trying occasion, she would wear a particularly great outfit "for the entertainment value." Michele was a voracious reader, an ambitious cook, a gleeful critic of the New York Times Vows section (which she called "Mergers and Acquisitions"), and, beginning in her mid-40s, a dedicated student of Italian. Although she would always deny achieving any fluency, the animated conversations she held while traveling in Italy and her shelves of books in Italian indicated otherwise. The one bright spot in Michele's illness has been Yanique Brown, who began working with her as an aide in 2017 and has cared for her since then with extraordinary understanding and skill. We are so grateful to Yanique for all she has given to both Michele and to us during these years. Services will be private. I met Michele when I moved to Arlington, MA my sophomore year of high school. We quickly became good friends and confidantes. We spent much time together working on the yearbook, in the Civil Rights Club, and just as friends. I visited Michele once at Bryn Mawr and saw that she still stood out in this intellectually elite group.
I lost touch with Michele these last 10 years, but her passing is still a major loss.
She, and her family are in my heart.

Michele and I sat next to each other in Spanish class at Arlington high school (MA). Our senses of humors matched well and the teacher gave me much better grades that I deserved simply because I was friend with the star student in the class.
I haven´t seen her in 55 years but I still remember her as one of the special persons I have met in my life.

Wickedly smart, faithful friend. Her incandescent self will be sorely missed.

I was a paralegal, 1986-1988, at Toll Ebby & Gough which became Toll Ebby & Langer and I adored Michele and always wished I could be as elegant as she was. She was smart and classy and fun. I remember she did not hire me, but the woman she hired turned it down, and she called me to say I was her second choice and when could I start, and I was like "Monday morning" because I hated the job I had at the time so much. It was so wonderful to work with other Bryn Mawr alumnae (Michele and Teresa Wallace). I felt enveloped in a cocoon of safety. Michele told me when she hired me that I was to work there for two years and then I was to move on to law school or grad school -- even though, she added, she thought I'd be happiest in book publishing. 35 years later... and I've worked in publishing since 1995 after ditching grad school ... she was right. Rest in peace, Michele, I will always love you for being one of the best, if not THE best, bosses I've ever had.

Michelle was a friend during law school and I followed her career through other friends. Not just really smart, but a really nice person. This is sad news indeed!

I was fortunate enough to attend law school at U of C with Michele. She was a wonderful conversationalist and had a sparkling personality. She is missed. Steven Fisher

Dear Alan and Lara,

I remember holding Michele's hand so tight while the Jury announced the Verdict in the Stainton
Lawsuit. My whole life was on the line and she was there for me.

And I remember her screaming with laughter as she showed me a photo of Lara having - or pretending
to have - her tongue stuck on a frozen parking meter pole.

You lost her so many years ago and I could not bear to visit...I didn't want to lose her, too.

Love, Tom Tarantino

Michele was a wonderful person and knowing that she´s passed away makes me very sad. When I think of her (and I think of her often) I see her laughing with enthusiasm about many many things. And smiling with disdain about many others. The obituary describes her so well, her intelligence, her charm, her insatiable curiosity. She liked Italy, Italian fashion, and the Italian language and in the past years, before her cruel disease took over her, we frequently wrote to each other, she correcting my English and I her Italian (which didn´t need much correction because even in this field she was skilled and proficient). She was my counsellor in the choice of books and her explanations of English sayings were precious. One of the best presents I have ever received was the subscription to the New Yorker that she made for me many years in a row. In addition to our views of the world, we shared recipes, traveling ideas, and, sadly, made projects for the future of our two couples together. I hope that her wonderful loving husband, her daughter, and sister will find peace after many difficult years, relishing in the memories of the special woman that Michele has been in their life and in the lives of all of us who had the privilege of being her friends.

She was always so nice to my sister and I. My mother worked at the firm as a secretary and we honestly grew up there. I´m so sad to hear about her passing. May God grant comfort and serenity to her loved ones.

I was a college dorm-mate of Miche´s, and we were part of a small, tight group of friends. I will never forget her sharp intelligence, fiendish sense of humor, and her signature blazing auburn hair. She freely shared information about her background and circumstances, and it always seemed so amazing that she had the internal resources to surmount them. I remember every year around the end of year holiday sales, she would make a tactical strike on the high end department stores, like Saks, and treat herself to deeply discounted fashion. Michele was one of a kind. My deepest sympathies to her family, colleagues, and friends.

Michele represented my company on a series of matters a few decades ago. She was a wonderful lawyer, with the ability to see the big picture, get quickly to the heart of the matter and speak effectively to management about the realities of the cases. She did a great job for us. Even more significantly, she was an amazing person - well-rounded, kind and fascinating to talk with. The world lost someone who set high standards, made the people around her better and made her communities better places.
