SCHAPHORST
PATRICIA (nee Smedick), died November 25, 2016 at Bishop White Lodge, Cathedral Village, Philadelphia. Pat was born in Middletown, Connecticut on March 12, 1931, the first child of Joseph and Katherine (Molchan) Smedick, of Portland and New Britain. She leaves her beloved husband Richard (Dick), whom she married on October 26, 1957 in Larchmont, New York. She also leaves her younger sister, friend and first pupil, Lois, of Windsor, Ontario. Pat and Dick have 3 much cherished children and their spouses, Karen (Greg) Schultz, Kenneth (Ellen Argyros) Schaphorst, and Stephen (Angèle Surault) Schaphorst, 6 dear grand-children, Aaron (Katy) Schultz and Melissa Schultz, Maxwell and Zachary Schaphorst, and Isaac and Caleb Schaphorst, and one great grandchild, Harrison Schultz. Pat received her Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and a Master's degree in education from Temple University, specializing in psychology. Over her long and varied career, Pat was employed by the Frankford Arsenal, Smith, Kline and French, Vita Education Services, Episcopal Community Services, Northeast Community Center for Behavioral Health and served as Social Worker and Director of the Jenkintown Day Nursery. And she worked for many years as a teacher, discussion leader, program planner, church school consultant, and chairman of adult education at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Glenside. She also volun-teered in many capacities, including work for the Women's Center of Montgomery County, Jenkintown's Shade Tree Commission and Cathedral Village, where Pat and Dick moved in September, 2007. Pat loved to swim, to sing, to sew, to garden, and was a deep reader, a natural mathematician and an expert games-player. There will be a Burial Service at St. Mary's Episcopal Church at 630 Cathedral Rd., Philadelphia, PA, 19128 on Saturday, December 10 at 11:00 A.M. with a reception and Memorial to follow at noon at Cathedral Village's Cathedral Hall (600 Cathedral Rd.). "Each life converges to some centre, Expressed or still . . ." (Emily Dickinson). Pat was at her center and will be there forever. Donations may be made to Episcopal Community Services and Wilson College.
