Of all the professors who supervised my graduate studies in Romance Languages (1986-88) you were the one who inspired me most with your sage advice and gentle encouragement, tolerant of my extra-curricular pursuits with the Penn Glee Club and in tune with what it meant to be a non-American student unsure as to whether or not he had made the correct decision to pursue a career in academia. I will always remember you fondly. P Becher (AM Romance Languages)
