My deepest sympathy to my Aunt Dottie, and to my cousins Mickey, David, Lee Anne, Keith, and Shelly, and also to the grandkids. I have many great memories of my Uncle Peter! He was kind, caring, generous, intelligent, and had a great sense of humor! I didn't quite "get" his humor when I was a "kid"! I thought he was being serious so many times, that I often hesitated to say anything when we were visiting! It wasn't until I was an adult, that I understood his " dry" sense of humor! I then realized just how funny my Uncle Pete could be! Uncle Peter was my Mom's "baby" brother, and I don't think she ever understood his sense of humor. Ever. Not. At. All! But my Mom loved her brother very much, and was so proud of him! She loved when our family would visit with Uncle Peter's family. I have wonderful memories!
Uncle Peter and Aunt Dottie would invite my sister Karen and I to spend some time with them during the summer. I remember one year we spent a week or two with them in Norristown. I was probably 6 or 7 years old. Fun times! That's the summer that Uncle Pete taught me how to swim! He had the patience of a saint! I think that was also the summer that my sister decided to climb the fence instead of opening the gate, and fell---- chipping her front tooth! That may also have been the same summer that I accidentally poured boiling water on my left hand while trying to make a cup of tea! ( it may have been a year or 2 later ) Thank God Aunt Dottie was a nurse, and Uncle Peter was a doctor! Aunt Dottie put a dressing on my hand, and when Uncle Peter came home, he took me to the emergency room at one of the hospitals so the ER Doctor could take care of my burn. I was not scared because Uncle Peter had such a calming effect on me!
My burn healed without any scarring!
Uncle Peter took my sister to Kiddie City, and let us pick out a one toy each time my sister and I spent time with them during the summer! I chose Miss Cookie's Kitchen, which was a Coloforms set! Another time I chose an art set--a color by number set! Thank you Uncle Peter!
Another summer, my sister and I stayed with Uncle Peter and Aunt Dottie in Ocean City, NJ! Another great summer! We would go to the beach during the day, and in the evening we would spend time on the boardwalk. Instead of having dinner at the house one evening, Uncle Peter took all of us to a "fancy" restaurant on the boardwalk (at least I thought it was fancy), and he allowed me to choose whatever I wanted from the menu! I felt grown up! I chose " chicken in a basket".
Another evening Uncle Peter took all of us to the movies to see The Parent Trap--the original with Hayley Mills and Maureen O'Hara! It was being shown in a theater! My sister and I had never seen a movie in a theater-- we usually went to a drive in theater!
I suppose I could go on and on as more memories start to surface in my thoughts! I wanted to share a few of the special moments that I was fortunate to have because of my Uncle Peter. He was very special to me. He was an inspiration! I hope he knew how much I admired and loved him! I was blessed to have him as my Uncle Peter! Thank you for everything Uncle Peter! Rest in Peace
