PETER HAGIS Obituary

HAGIS
PETER JR.
Professor emeritus of Temple University passed away on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 at the age of 91. Born on Jan. 16, 1926, in Phila., Peter completed his undergraduate studies in mathe-matics at Temple University and went on to receive his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. Peter was a mathematics professor at Temple for over 40 years. He was a devoted member of Somerton United Methodist Church where he served as President of the Methodist Men and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In his later years, he volunteered at the Somerton Interfaith Food Bank. Peter gave 100 percent to everything he did and was always willing to lend a hand. He will always be remembered for his incred-ible intelligence, his wonderful sense of humor, his devotion to his family and his loyalty to the Temple Owls basketball team.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife Jeanie, of Hatboro, his daughter Joann Johnson and her husband Dan, of Feasterville, and his 3 adored grandchildren, Danny and Amanda Johnson of Feaster-ville and Killian Hagis of Raleigh, NC. He was pre-deceased by his son, Lt. Col. (USAF Retired) Peter Scott Hagis. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Schmidt, of Gettysburg, and other nieces and nephews. The family would like to express extreme appreciation to his caregiver Musu (Sue).
A Visitation will be held on Saturday January 20, 2018 at 10 A.M. at Somerton United Methodist Church (chapel), 13073 Bustleton Ave, Phila., 19116; a Memorial Service will follow at 11 A.M. also at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family would gratefully like donations made to Temple University or The Wounded Warrior Project.

Great math teacher and a fine gentleman. I had him for Complex Analysis at Temple many decades ago. It was a terrific course. I still have his notes to this day.

I am saddened to learn, via the Temple alumni magazine, of the death of Dr. Hagis. He was my math professor in two courses in 1970 and 1971. He was a wonderful teacher and a very nice person. He was gracious in providing me with additional help in his office and also gave me copies of some of the articles he had published. In reading the obituary I learned that he was born on the very same day as my mother! He certainly was a class act.--Gary Schwartz, Class of 1971

Dr. Peter Hagis was my dissertation advisor at Temple University. I was aware of his work in number theory, and I wanted to study under him. I didn't know he was retiring the year I asked him to be my advisor, but he readily agreed. This wonderful man spent the first couple of years of his retirement coming in to the campus once a week to advise me! I had a fulfilling experience writing my dissertation, thanks to him. Upon earning my degree, I found a position in the Virgin Islands, where I have lived ever since. We kept in touch, and he shipped me many math books, which I still have and will always treasure. I always had the utmost respect for Dr. Hagis. He was first rate, all the way, as a number theorist and as a person.

Peter Hagis was one of the best people I ever met. He was initially the professor in a number theory class in my senior year at Temple. Later, when I joined the faculty, we became colleagues and friends. In that capacity, his wonderful daughter Joann was a student in one of my classes. His retirement address remains one of the warmest, funniest accounts I have ever heard about Temple University. We shared a love of Temple sports, especially basketball, for which we bought season tickets for many years. I will miss him!
