Dr. Peter N. Walsh

WALSH DR. PETER N. April 16, 1935 - Sept. 24, 2025 The scientific community mourns the loss of Dr. Peter N. Walsh, MD, PhD, an internationally respected investigator, mentor, and physician whose pioneering research transformed our understanding of thrombosis and hemostasis. Dr. Walsh passed away peacefully at home September 24, 2025 at the age of 90. Dr. Walsh earned his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in 1961 and completed his PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Oxford in 1972. At Oxford, he trained under Dr. Rosemary Biggs in blood coagulation research, where he began to develop the meticulous and mechanistic approach that would define his career. Following his time in Oxford, Dr. Walsh joined the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as an Assistant Professor in the Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center-beginning an academic career that would span more than four decades. Over the years, he served as Professor of Medicine, Attending Physician, Director of the Special Clinical Studies Laboratory, and Co-Director of the Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center. He also held appointments as Visiting Investigator at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California, and as Director of the M.D./Ph.D. Program and Professor of Biochemistry at Temple. To his trainees, Dr. Walsh embodied the best of academic medicine: brilliance without arrogance, high standards balanced by kindness, and an abiding belief in the value of mentorship. His influence endures through the many scientists he trained-individuals who carry forward his methods, standards, and spirit of inquiry into their own work. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marny, 3 children, Steve (Sharon), Kathleen and Elizabeth Ciccarone (Albert) and 5 grandsons and one great grand daughter. A "Celebration of the Life of Peter Walsh" will take place on Saturday, January 3 at 1:00 P.M. at Cathedral Village, 600 E. Cathedral Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19128, where he has lived for the past 8 years. A reception will follow. All are welcome.
