SCOTT MACKLER Obituary

MACKLER
SCOTT ANDREW, MD, PhD, recipient of the Order of the First State, Delaware's highest civilian honor, died Wednesday evening at home after a courageous 15-year battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease. Scott was a physician-scientist at University of Pennsylvania Pearlman School of Medicine and at Philadelphia VA Hospital. He was a Penn Quaker through and through-graduating with a total of four degrees.
Born on May 7, 1958 and raised in Bloomfield NJ, Scott excelled at every facet of life. His intellect was matched only by his passion for athletics. He played soccer in college and continued playing until stricken by ALS at the age of 40. Scott was an avid marathoner, completing both the Boston and New York City Marathons multiple times. He also coached both his sons' soccer teams throughout their youth and had a lasting effect on countless young soccer players.
Scott excelled as both a neuroscientist and physicia n. He received several awards for his successful research on drug addiction, which focused on a protein in the brain that he and his colleagues discovered. Ironically, Scott spent the later years of his research studying that protein's possible connection to ALS, the disease that robbed him of all muscle movement over the last 15 years.
Scott was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was featured in countless news articles and magazines, includ--ing being featured on CBS News' 60 Minutes. He was, through these and with his owns words and example, the consummate teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn Snyder-Mackler; sons, Alexander and Noah; daughter-in-law, Laura Mackler; brother, Harvey Mackler; sister, Randi Windheim; nieces and nephews; his caregiver, Dana Crumpler Williams; his Bayada nurses and hundreds of members of Scott's crew, students and friends who aided his incredible journey. Each day it took an army, and Scott inspired one.
Graveside Services were held Friday, November 15, 2013. A Memorial Service will be 2 P.M., Sunday, November 17th, at Temple Beth El, 301 Possum Park Rd., Newark DE 19711. Shiva will be observed 7:30 P.M. Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the late residence. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Scott A. Mackler, MD, PhD Assistive Technology Fund at the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia.

Lynn, Alexander and Noah,
I want to extend my condolences for your loss of husband and father. I feel so privileged to have known Scott and to be able to have him come into my hair salon to get his haircut. He is truly an inspiration and with such courage and strength to continue in his life....everyone's life that he has touched in anyway. I know that what he has accomplished in his works has helped so many. I will miss him and proud to have had him cross my path in life.

Dear Scott,
Your benevolence and humanitarian personality will be sorely missed by all. You are certainly one of the 'good guys' who had so much to offer and was taken from us at such a young age. You can very proudly now, look down on the many thousand people who have supported you during our 14 year run of 5k events an rejoice on how SO MUCH a part of their lives -YOU HAVE BECOME!!! To paraphrase from a very inspirational Hebrew prayer-"As long as we live, you to will live, for you are now a part of us as we remember them"
Always in our prayers!

I met Scott through his brother Harvey who was my fraternity brother at Penn (Pi Kappa Alpha) which Scott later joined. Scott and Harvey's childhood friend Bob Hackel was my long-time work colleague and Harvey played with us on our office softball team. I clearly remember attending Scott's bachelor dinner near the Quakerbridge (NJ) Mall. I have admired his courage and determination as he tried to cope with his horrific disease through innovative and experimental treatments and devices. A soul like Scott's will surely live on.
