Edgar J. "Red" Cummings

Edgar (Red) J. Cummings, age 89, of East Tawas passed away of natural causes on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at Iosco County Medical Care Facility in Tawas City.
Red was born in Weymouth, Mass. on Sept. 16, 1923. At the age of 13, his family moved to Corunna, where he graduated from Corunna High School in 1941. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 through 1945. During World War II, he served for 20 months in the invasion and occupation of Pacific Island of Tarawa. Much like the movie "Saving Private Ryan," Red and his three brothers all served in and returned from World War II.
Red returned to Corunna after marrying Peggy Hicks in 1945. He worked as service manager at Backus Ford, and as an electrician at Ford Motor Company in Owosso.
Red married his second wife, Alice Soukup, in 1962 and they moved to Tawas in 1968. Red and Alice owned and operated Lakeview Resort in Tawas City for eight years. He was Iosco County's emergency services coordinator in the 1980s. Red's remaining pre-retirement employment included being a commercial electrician, real estate agent/broker and resort manager. He was a Master Mason at the Tawas Masonic Lodge since 1974.
Red was an eternally happy and optimistic gentle man who was loved by all who knew him. He and Alice enjoyed their many years working and traveling in Michigan, Texas, Florida and Arizona.
Red is survived by his children, Beverly (Frank) Bush of Plano, Texas, James (Peggy) Cummings of Owosso, Ed Cummings of Owosso, Bonny (Ed) Miller from Sierra Vista, Ariz., Diane (Marc) St. George of East Tawas and Debbie (Nelson) Bellingham from Presott Valley, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Mildred Cummings; and his brothers, Robert, Fred and Herbert.
