James Benson Obituary

James Reese Benson, age 83, of National City, passed away peacefully on Sept. 15, 2025, at home in the care of family and friends.
Jim was born on March 6, 1942, in Rochester, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Edwards, and George Edwards (stepfather).
Jim lived a full hard working life as a truck driver in his younger years, a welder and business owner in Durand. Jim retired and relocated to National City to enjoy his favorite things in life; fishing, working on cars and helping in the community that he loved very much.
Jim found great joy by providing transportation to the Amish community that he loved. Most will remember his sense of humor, witty personality and his ability to live life on his own terms. He found purpose in helping others while asking little in return.
Jim was survived by his daughter, Michelle (Darwyn) Sparks; son, James (Semhar) Benson; daughter, Jeri (Perry) Manzanares; stepson, Rick (Tracey) Ralston; brother, Rod Benson; and sister, Patty (Ron) Edwards-Barrett. Jim was also survived by his grandchildren, Kelly (Mike) Knight, Joshua (Kaitlyn) Sparks, Tracy (Alex) Zimmer, Joshua Manzanares and Andrew (Joanna) Manzanares; and 13 great grandchildren.
Jim will be greatly missed by Rod and Nancy Bereznicki, his close endearing friends that came to be family. Jim leaves behind his beloved dog, Annie, his faithful companion and protector that watched over him and never left his side.
The family would like to express overwhelming and immense gratitude to all who supported and surrounded him with love during his journey. There are no words.
A graveside service/ internment will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 11, at Pioneer Cemetery along Old State Road, National City, with Bishop Harvey Mast officiating.
Following the graveside service, a celebration of Jim's life will be held in his honor. Family and friends are invited to gather on Oct. 11, at noon, at the Sand Lake Community Building along Indian Lake Road in National City.
