James Cook Obituary

James F. Cook, a retired carpenter, teacher, and Vietnam War veteran, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024 at the age of 76 in Tawas City.
Born Feb. 2, 1948 in Fort Worth, Texas to Lt. Col. Warren G. and Mary G. Cook, Jim graduated from Rome Catholic High School in Rome, New York in 1966, enlisting in the United States Air Force shortly thereafter. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam, working in a civil engineering unit building runways.
After an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1970 he earned a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Management and Fisherman's Biology from Michigan State University.
An Oscoda resident of over 40 years, Jim worked as a carpenter and later at Alpena Community College and the IRESA Tech Center where he taught computer science and building trades. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed bowling, gardening, and playing the guitar.
He was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, Raymond. Jim is survived by his daughter, Samantha Cook; and five siblings, Carol Ann Hamilton of Oscoda, Susan Davis of Lost Lake Woods, Mary Jo Samotis, Warren Cook Jr. and Diane Cook, all of Oscoda; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jim's life will take place on Thursday, Aug. 15 at the American Legion, 849 S. State Street in Oscoda. Jim's family will greet friends beginning at 3 p.m. with a service to begin at 4 p.m.
