Ann Philbin Obituary
February 19, 1936 - July 22, 2024
Cupertino, California - Ann M. Philbin (nee Gara), a 30-year resident of Hilton Head Island who recently moved to Cupertino, California, passed into God's hands on July 22, 2024.
Born in 1936 to Irish immigrants in The Bronx, NY, Ann met the love of her life, Michael Philbin of Brooklyn, also a first-generation Irish-American, at a Christmas dance in 1957. They were married and raised four children on neighboring Long Island before retiring to Hilton Head Plantation in 1993.
Between family visits, Ann and Mike traveled extensively across the United States, South America, and throughout Europe. Parishioners at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, Ann and Mike were also active members of Dolphin Head Golf Club. After Mike's passing in 2005, Ann built strong friendships through a local bereavement group that continued through her life. Ann loved her life on Hilton Head, and volunteered as an usher at The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina and as a server of Thanksgiving meals at Hudson's. Most of all, Ann loved hosting family on beautiful Hilton Head Island.
Ann continued to live in her and Mike's "forever home" for more than 18 years after his passing. After leaving the Low Country to be closer to her daughter in California, Ann quickly became active in her new independent living community. Though her time in California was short, she made an indelible impression on all she met and relished every extra minute shared with family.
Ann is survived by her children, Theresa Eyre (Joseph) of Los Altos, CA, Michael Philbin (Leisa) of Spokane, WA, Steven Philbin (Janet) of Smithtown, NY, and Kenneth Philbin (Alixandra) of Cortlandt Manor, NY, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her sister-in-law Beth Welch of Vineyard Haven, MA.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on August 8, 2024, at St. Francis by the Sea, followed by interment at the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ann's name to the American Heart Association (https://www.heart.org/) or American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/).
