Betsy Cunneff Obituary

Betsy Cunneff Nancy Elizabeth Cunneff ("Betsy"), 58, died on Jan. 23 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The daughter of Danford and Suzanne Greene, Betsy was born on Dec. 1, 1954 in Santa Monica, Calif. and loved riding her horse, Sugie, in the Santa Monica Mountains. She graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1979 and then went to work as a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines. She married her husband, Tom, on May 3, 1986 and dove into motherhood with complete joy when their daughter, Katie, came along in 1995. The family moved to Hilton Head in 2006 when Tom took a job with LINKS Magazine. Betsy continued to fly for Northwest (now Delta), while working part-time at Hilton Head Humane, taking her beloved dog, Holiday, for walks on the beach, raising her daughter, being a terrific wife, and devouring a book a week. She passed away peacefully at 7:35 pm surrounded by her family. The funeral will be held at Gates Mortuary in Santa Monica on Feb. 9 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to either the Hilton Head Human Association (hhhumane.org) or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (lls.org).

Funny how I was remembering Betsy this week, as I sit watching Sundance film festival in Park City and thought of her and her dad, Dan, when he won best film editor award for his work in Blazing Saddles and back in the 70´s, and I receive this notification of 10 years that she passed! She left a impressive memory in all of us! Peace to you my friend, Betsy

I met Betsy in college in Greeley, Colorado when we were misplaced "beach bums" from California. We ended up both working for different airlines that eventually merged as one, Northwest/Delta a few years ago. I had heard that she had retired, but often thought our paths would cross years later at work. She always impressed me that family was so important to her, and through her friends from work, told me she lived for her family, I was so glad to hear that she made the best of her life with her family to the end. We are so lucky that Betsy left a positive outlook on life as she made on me. Peace be with you Betsy. You will be missed!

Tom, Katie, John "O", Suzie and Dan plus Maile, Kelly and all the family: I am so glad to have had Betsy as a friend growing up. She had an unbelievable ability to humor people, take things and "roll with it" and iron out the wrinkles of life. I treasure her memory. My deepest condolences to all of you for her earthly loss. She fought severe illness with the same intensity that she lived life in my opinion.
