David Given Obituary
April 23, 1935 - June 7, 2025
Hilton Head, South Carolina - Dave passed away on Saturday, June 7th 2025 at the age of 90. He was born in Steubenville, Ohio to Robert and Ruth Given.
At an early age, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Dave graduated from Fairview Park High School in 1952 where he met the love of his life, Carol Apel. He also graduated from Culver Military Academy Summer Schools where he was a proud member of The Black Horse Troop.
He attended and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1956. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and lettered in both track and football. During his Senior year, Dave was Wing Commander of the Air Force ROTC.
After graduating from college he married his sweetheart, Carol, in December of 1956.
In 1957 Dave entered active duty and served at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. While at Eglin he played football on the 1958 National Service Championship team.
Dave and Carol moved to Westlake, Ohio in 1959 where Dave commenced a successful business career. He owned and operated several industrial oriented small businesses. He was a loyal Cleveland Browns fan and served as President of the Cleveland Touchdown Club. He was an avid golfer and skier and coached Little League sports.
Dave and Carol were members of Lakewood Country Club for 35 years. Upon semi-retirement they moved to Bluffton, S.C. where they were members of the Belfair Golf Club for 22 years. In 2021 they moved to Tide Pointe on Hilton Head Island and were members of the Lowcountry Presbyterian Church.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, his daughter, Elizabeth Given Fodor and husband Bill of Boston, MA. Five grandchildren, Ryan and Samantha Fodor (Darien, CT), Kevin Fodor (Denver, CO), Jack and Tucker Given (Layfette, CA), Cal Given and wife Katie (Boston, MA). Three great grandchildren; Jack, Grace and Ellie Fodor. He was predeceased by two sons, James (wife Erin of Boston, MA) and Jeffrey (wife Geri of Lafayette, CA) sister Carol Imm and brother Thomas Given.
He especially enjoyed following his childrens' sports careers.
