Dominick Mastrion Obituary
January 4, 1959 - July 18, 2023
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Dominick Peter Mastrion passed away on the evening of July 18th, 2023, at the age of 64 surrounded by his loving wife and family. Dominick, a native New Yorker, was born and raised in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn to Dominick Mastrion and Joanne Zito Mastrion (both deceased) alongside his five surviving siblings. He spent many years in his youth as a professional drummer accompanying performers such as Debbie Harry, David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, various members of The Ramones and The New York Dolls to name a few. After his music career, Dominick spent many years as a restaurateur and a specialty contractor, owning several businesses. His work brought him across the country where he eventually came to South Carolina and met his wife, Suzanne Ouellette-Mastrion. With the marriage came three step-daughters; Tess, Sophie, and Faye Hinteregger, who he loved as his own. Anyone who knew Dominick would describe him as a big-hearted, dynamic and welcoming man with a larger than life personality. To know Dominick was to love him.
Dominick is survived by his wife, Suzanne Ouellette-Mastrion; his mother-in-law, Mary T Johnson; his three step-daughters; Tess, Sophie, and Faye Hinteregger; as well as his five siblings; Terry (sister) and husband, Ray Travaglione, John Mastrion (brother), Rosemarie (sister) and husband, Frank Pisani, Peter (brother) and wife, Shelley Mastrion and Joanne Mastrion (sister). Dominick was also a beloved uncle to his surviving nieces and nephews; Taylor and Matthew Travaglione, Peter, Jenna and Nick Mastrion, Frank and Angela Pisani, and Giana Mastrion.
Services will be held for friends and family at St. Andrews Chapel in Bluffton, SC on Friday, July 21st, 2023 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the YANA Club, 107 Mathews Drive, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, 29926.

Briefly in 1976, Dominick played drums in Firefly, a Brooklyn band in which I was lead singer and organist. Not long after that, Dominick played with John Earl Walker and later with David Johansen. Dominick and I re-acquainted on Facebook. He will be missed. Rest in peace and in power, Dominick.

Wow this is such a shock. I haven´t seen Dom in years but we spoke on Facebook a few times. We started jamming and playing music together in our teens and there was an instant connection musically. I´m happy I crossed paths with you Dom, in this life and glad we had many memorable jams and great times in Brooklyn growing up. My condolences to John and rest of the Mastrion family. You´ll be missed bro.

A pain went through my heart when I learned of Dominick´s passing. He was such a big, bright light in the world and could always make me laugh. I´ll never forget playing along side him in our "pick-up" band at our joint birthday party. I will miss you, brother.

My sincere condolences to Suzanne and the entire Mastrion family for your loss. Suzanne helped Sally and I find our retirement home in the mountains of Todd NC and Dominick transformed our new home into our dream home! Dom and Sally celebrated their 60th birthdays at our new cabin with Dom on drums, Scott on guitar and Sally singing. Dom we will miss your smile, friendship and lust for life.

I haven't been part of Dominick's inner circle for over 40 years but we grew up together in Brooklyn and reconnected through FB in the last few years. I have a memory to share from our teenage years together. It was probably 1973 and Bowie was at the top of the charts. Suffragette City was a huge hit. I was hanging out with Dominick in his basement with a couple of other friends. Dom had a great stereo and his drum kit was down in the basement as well. He was playing the Bowie album on full blast while playing the drums to the songs. His playing was so perfect that I couldn't tell if I was hearing the record or him! For some reason, when Suffragette City came on, Dom went into another gear in terms of passion, joyous aggression and virtuosity. This is one of my most vivid memories from the teen years. I remember feeling "It doesn't / can't get better than this". I could have lived in that moment forever. Connected to friends but also to the pure ecstasy of music. We jammed a lot together in those days and I always felt I was trying to keep up and included as a sweet, friendly courtesy. Was never in his league as a musician. That moment captured the best part of being a young teen - passionate, adventurous, immortal. Alive! I will hold on to this memory forever. Love you Dominick.
