Ed Storin Obituary

Ed Storin
December 4, 1929 - April 25, 2022
Woodstock , Georgia - Ed Storin was born in Providence, R.I on Dec. 4, 1929. He attended the University of Miami, where he met his wife of 69 years, Ginny. Upon graduation, he was hired by the Miami Herald, where he had a distinguished career. Starting as a copy boy, he rose to the positions of Executive Sports Editor and Managing Editor. He served as bureau chief for Knight Ridder newspapers coordinating winter and summer Olympic coverage in Los Angeles, Calgary, Albertville, Barcelona, Lillehammer, and Atlanta. After retirement he and Ginny moved to Hilton Head Island, S.C., where he wrote a sports column for the Island Packet.
He was mentor to a long list of sports writers and editors who went on to become nationally known writers, editors, publishers and sports television personalities. He was one of the founders of the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) organization and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2010. He was the 1992 recipient of the prestigious Red Smith Award for excellence in Sports Journalism, which is given annually to those who have achieved the highest level in sports writing or editing. In 2019 he was recipient of the Jack Berninger Award for meritorious service to the APSE. He was the first person to win both of these awards.
He was a diehard Boston Red Sox fan his entire life. He also loved sailing, golf, thoroughbred racing, and the Miami Hurricanes.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Kathy (Jon) Fishman, sons Michael (Gail), Robert, and Edward (Carey), eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, to whom he was known as "Papa". Because of his lifelong love of horse racing, the family requests donations to a rescue organization for retired thoroughbreds, "After The Races", in Elkton, Md. (aftertheraces.org).

Our condolences to Ginny and the family. We were so sorry to hear the news of Ed's passing, as he was always a man with a smile. I loved playing golf with Ed and speaking sports. His love for baseball and the Red Sox will never be trumped. We were privileged to have known a wonderful person.
