Frank Sliva Obituary

Frank SlivaFRANK SLIVA, 93, passed from this earth on July 25, 2015. Beloved father of daughters Barbara Brakman, Monica Sliva and son John Sliva, grandfather of Carolyn Miles-Harris (Natalie), Kathleen Moffatt (Bryan), Victoria, Frank (Michelle), Hannah and William Sliva , and great-grandfather of Reed, Molly, Claire, Callum and Connor. He is also survived by three sisters - Maria Tomkova, Bozena Hribova and Anezka Vaculinova, all of Sumice in the Czech Republic. Frank was born in the former Czechoslovakia and served in the Czech resistance movement, fighting both the Germans during WWII and the Communist Party immediately thereafter. Being a leader of the Czech student's movement, he was jailed by the Communists as an enemy of the state, but escaped incarceration and fled to France, where he remained for two years. In 1948, Frank emigrated to Canada, where he met and married Milada, his beloved wife of 63 years, who has been waiting for him in heaven for the past 2 years. He was a graduate of the law faculty of Charles University in Prague and earned a master's degree from McGill University in Montreal. Frank served several corporations as CFO before retiring to his farm in the Catskill Mountains in New York. He remained active and interested in Czech politics throughout his life. In 2004, Frank and Milada moved to Bluffton, which they regarded as a paradise they never could have imagined during the hard times of war and depression that they endured. During his final illness, Frank was lovingly cared for by his children and by Agape Hospice, who treated him with kindness and dignity. We thank them for their service both to Frank and the community. A memorial mass in Frank's honor will be held in the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Astoria, NY in October. Internment will be in Sumice, Czech Republic. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the Wounded Warriors Fund in the name of Frank A. Sliva.
