George Johnson Obituary
March 9, 1941 - October 4, 2020
Hilton Head, South Carolina - George Ross Johnson, of Mendham Township, NJ, and Hilton Head, SC, passed away on October 4, 2020 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City after a long illness. Born on March 9, 1941, in Flint, Michigan, George was the only child of the late Eleanor Falk and Ross BryantJohnson. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda Frank Johnson, his two sons, Arthur Bryant Johnson and Ross Butler Johnson, Ross's wife Kelly, and hisgranddaughter, Kelsey Lynn Johnson.
George grew up in Kenilworth, IL, and graduated from nearby New Trier High School in 1959. Following a post-graduate year at Lake Forest Academy, he attended the University of Pennsylvania and received his BA in 1964. After service in the Navy, George began a successful 40-year career in financial printing, working as a Sales Manager at RR Donnelly and rising to Sr. Vice President at Bowne Inc. Often referred to among friends and associates as a "true gentleman", George was known for his modesty, reserve, and life-long dedication to service. He was a deacon and elder at Central Presbyterian Church inSummit, active at Hilltop Presbyterian Church in Mendham, and served on the board of Presbyterian Homes, a non-profit provider of senior and assisted living housing.
?In his free time, George enjoyed golf and was a member of Baltusrol Golf Club since 1979. Insatiably curious, he also loved to read—history in particular—and, after his retirement in 2005, traveled widely with his wife Linda. But, above all else, George loved being with his family, especially during biannual Christmas visits to his beloved Quebec City. He will be missed by all who knewhim.
?Pursuant to his wishes, George will be cremated and his ashes placed next to his parents', in Evanston, IL. A memorial service will be held this spring, time and place to be announced.
