Gregory James Obituary

Gregory H. James, age 69, departed this life on September 4, 2013 with his loving family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Beverly, who he met and married in college at Southern Illinois University. He is also survived by a son, Christopher Medlock, his wife Bradley, and their three sons, Jasper, Loc, and Calder of San Francisco, and a daughter, Laura James Alford, her husband Neil and their two sons, Brady and Dane. After military service Greg began a 45 year real estate and public service career. He was a licensed appraiser, involved in commercial and apartment development, served on the hospital board, taught real estate classes at Southeastern Illinois College, was owner of franchise restaurants in Illinois, Kentucky and Mississippi.He also served on the public utility board and served as a state Vice President of the Illinois Jaycees. Upon moving to Hilton Head in 1989, he worked for a division of Sea Pines, the Hilton Head Company, and later for Sea Pines Commercial Division. In 1991 he founded the Wm. F. Hilton Real Estate Company. He was active in the community as a graduate of Leadership Hilton Head and a member of its Board of Regents. He was a Rotarian and past president of Van Landingham Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He held a Real Estate Broker's license in Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina and South Carolina. He served as a Trustee of the Hilton Head Multiple Listing Service for 19 years and served as president of the Hilton Head Association of Realtors, Life Member of the Million Dollar Club, 1995 Realtor of the Year and Chairman of the High School Improvement Council. He enjoyed his family, friends, fly fishing and hunting. He took special joy and pride in being one of the announcers on #9 green during the RBC Heritage of Golf. Services will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 3001 Meeting Street at 4pm on Saturday, September 7, 2013, with a Celebration of Life at Sea Pines Country Club from 5:30 to 9. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Van Landingham Rotary Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 5013, Hilton Head Island, SC 29938 or the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, 4915 St. Elmo Avenue, Suite 202, Bethesda, MD 20814.
