James Lisenby Obituary

James Daniel Lisenby

April 7, 1948 - February 22, 2025

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Hilton Head Island residents and visitors have lost one of the low country's most creative bartenders, business entrepreneurs and good souls.

James Daniel Lisenby, known as "Pool Bar Jim," 76, of Hilton Head Island died Saturday, February 22.

Jim was born in Hamlet, NC in 1948. The youngest of six children, Jim worked for the railroads as a teen during the summers spraying weeds along the tracks to raise money to pay for college.

He attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. Shortly thereafter, Jim entered a field that would remain his passion for the rest of his life - the hospitality industry.

Jim bartended at establishments in NC snow ski resorts and during leisure times, enjoyed snow skiing.

In the early 1970s, Jim joined the team of bartenders working the pool bar at the Myrtle Beach Hilton, where each bartender took on the title "Pool Bar" before their individual names. Thus, the moniker "Pool Bar Jim" was born and stuck.

In 1978, Jim migrated to Hilton Head Island and quickly secured a bartending position with Sea Pines Company eventually working at the Hilton Head Inn, now Marriott Grande Ocean. In the off-season winter months, Jim travelled the Caribbean in search of the best exotic drinks. He had a knack for knowing what adjustments were needed to make the best drinks even better.

Jim started writing down his recipes and giving unique names to his many drink concoctions. This collection soon became a book, Pool Bar Jim's Famous Frozen Drinks. A logo was developed as well and soon visitors to the pool bar were purchasing, not only copies of his book, but a variety of logoed merchandise as well, all while enjoying his delicious drink creations.

In the early 1980s, Jim left the pool bar and opened a nightclub, Jim's Paradise, in Fountain Center. It was the Island's party hot spot for almost a decade. But in 1992, Jim's Paradise closed its doors and Jim took some time to regroup. Gradually, he re-entered the hospitality industry and accepted an opportunity to join forces with Dave and Raina Peck to open Pool Bar Jim's beach bar at the Sea Crest.

This phenomenally successful venture provided opportunities for Jim to train and work with a fantastic group of fellow bartenders. Together, they served residents and visitors special drinks while enjoying getting to know each one of them. They were truly a team that put customers first and showed they valued them by providing friendly hospitality and personalized service. The customers quickly became friends.

During this time, Jim published a second book, Pool Bar Jim's Tropical and Exotic Frozen Drinks.

In 2003, Jim was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in an extremely late stage. He fought the disease, and, with determination and aggressive treatment, the cancer went into remission. Jim enjoyed 20 more years of happy, productive living before he experienced breathing problems in 2023. He was informed that he had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He finally succumbed to the disease on February 22, 2025.

Jim is survived by his son Robert Daniel Lisenby of Asheville, NC and dearest friend, Sue Zook, of Hilton Head Island.

He is also survived by his brother, Charles Lisenby of Summerville, SC; sisters, Margaret Gowder of Lexington, SC, Joann MacDougald and brother-in-law Gordon of Summerville, SC and Bonnie Lisenby of Hamlet, NC. Also, several nephews, a niece and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

A drop-in memorial will be held in Celebration Park off Pope Avenue on Hilton Head Island on Saturday, March 8, 2025 between 12 noon - 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that in memory of "Pool Bar Jim" you tip your hospitality servers a little extra!

Jim was our bartender for years at Grande Ocean. Phenomenal drinks, great hospitality, and reasonable prices for a resort. His positive outlook was an added blessing. We missed him dearly when he left. Frankly, it hasn’t been the same. Prices went through the roof and the ambiance is just not there. Sorry to hear of his passing. He was an island Legend. RIP and serve this Pearly Gate residents your finest cocktails!

Pool Bar Jim soon became friend Jim over our many visits to his bar.
We would chat about all sorts of topics. He was always so generous with his time and would happily pose for pictures with us and our friends. We have the sweetest memories of our time with Jim. And now we have the photographs to remind us what a special man and friend Jim was. RIP dear Jim.

Met Jim as a teenager at Grand Ocean. Then my own kids got mudslides with gummies in them. I have pictures of my daughter with Jim behind the bar. Two years ago we introduced our new daughter in law to Jim and got her picture with him as well. This past summer, sent friends to the bar and they too fell in love. Pool Bar Jim´s has always been part of our HHI vacations. We will miss you Jim.

He held me in his arms when I was three weeks old. I´d go every spring break and he always brought a smile to my face. He always gave me an extra Reesie´s cup and was the nicest guy I ever met. We see him in the stars.

Legendary, fun, everyone loved his special concoctions and hanging out at Pool Bar Jim’s, including the kids. We knew him for 25+ years, but only from our annual visits to HHI. Yet surprisingly he always remembered our name! That was a gift! Rest in peace, PBJ. HHI will never be the same.

I met Jim 30 something years ago and saw right away that I was in the presence of a "Legend". Over the years Jim made some of the most fantastic drinks I had ever tasted. Being a Caribbean sailor and having tasted so many adult beverages in the islands, Jim amazed me with his knowledge and ability to duplicate some my Caribbean favorites with spot on accuracy. Driving from my home in Charleston, Jim's Bar was always my 1st stop and Jim's smile was always my first impression that I craved.
Jim will be missed by all of us on the island but think of the heavenly drink concoctions being served above. God bless you Jim.

An acquaintance and I were introduced to Jim by a local friend at the Hilton Head Inn in the early 80´s. Not knowing the intricacies of Jim´s concoctions, I ordered a "rum & Coke". My friend started laughing stating "You really don´t have a clue where you are"! I was quickly schooled about Pool Bar Jim´s special drinks! I´ve been a loyal customer ever since and have introduced many to his magical libations at all of his subsequent locations on the beach. Whether I was vacationing there or attending The Heritage I made a point to visit Pool Bar Jim´s. Over the past 40+ years each visit he remembered my name and was accommodating to all of my guests. Us both being in the restaurant/bar business we had informative and enlightening conversations about the business. His guaranteed smile and welcoming hospitality will be sadly missed. Hilton Head has lost a legend. Rest in everlasting peace my good friend.

Jim and his team made our trips to Hilton Head so enjoyable. Having them on site at the Sea Crest added a whole extra dimension to our trips. They were a group of friends that we loved spending time with. Jim will be sorely missed by us and all that knew him.

I moved to The Island in 1978 and met Pool Bar Jim at The Hilton Head Inn in the very early years of 1980's. That area of HHI was a very popular spot with the Crow's Nest in the evenings (Earl Williams) and Pool Bar Jim's during the days. Jim always had a BIG smile on his face when he was working. And what a story telling he was!!! He will most certainly be missed. He evolved as he went from being an Exotic Bartender Designer to a great friend of many for over 40ish years. RIP my friend!!!

Jim and I were from the same small town of Hamlet, NC and went to high school together. Even though we lived in different places over the last nearly 59 years, we always seemed to keep in touch. In my work travels over the years when I was traveling from Savannah back to Charleston, SC, I would detour over to Hilton Head and go by Pool Bar Jim's, sit at the bar and we would catch up on what had been going on with our other classmates. While we were talking, he'd be fixing a frozen drink for a customer, and it seems like he would always have an extra ounce or two left in the blender cup and he'd pour it in a cup for me and say, "try this" (which I did)!

He was a good friend and made so many other friends over the years.
I'm going to miss him!
May God bless his family and his many friends.

I first met Jim back in the early 80’s . I bought his first book and tried to mix drinks the way that he did. That was a tall task as no one could build a concoction like Jim.
He grew up in Hamlet,NC and I grew up in Rockingham just 5 miles away.
I have always felt like we had a connection.I will miss his friendly smile and his willingness to always take time to strike a conversation and of course his exotic intoxicotics.
May his family fine peace and good memories in this time of sorrow!

I met Jim first at The Hilton Head Inn in 1980. Friends would come to the S Forrest beach location to windsurf, Jim worked with management to provide a gathering spot for this scruffy local community of sailors In the early 80's. Soon setting up ion The HH Inn lawn , windsurfing ,followed by long sunsets at the bar became a daily tradition and the seeds of a life long friendship. I miss you my dear friend. Sail on....

Jim was truly a legend. My family and I would visit the Marriott Grande Ocean every year and “ Pool Bar Jim’s” was our destination of choice. Jim always greeted us with that famous smile as he prepared those fantastic drinks.
The best part was he would run us a tab so we could just settle up at the end of the week.
Jim was one of those larger than life guys and will be sorely missed.

I have known Jim for about as long as I can remember. He is my son, Logan Doughtie’s god father. The one aspect of Jim’s that sticks in my mind is he always had a smile on his face. Even during brutally hot summer days and hordes of customers swamping him with “I want this’ or “I want that” that smile never went away. Now that alone is a testament to a wonderful life. God Bless.
