Jim Rattray Obituary

Jim Rattray Jim Rattray of Hilton Head Plantation, died on Monday, August 5. He was 82. Born in New York, NY, he spent the World War II years in Sligo, Ireland. Following schooling in New York he worked for the newspaper New York Mirror. During the Korean War, he was a U.S. Marine Corps Combat Correspondent and was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon his return from the service, he was a reporter and editor at the Mirror for 13 years. He and his family moved to Columbia, MD in 1963 when he joined the Central Intelligence Agency until his retirement in 1993. Since moving to Hilton Head, Jim has worked as a volunteer for the Hilton Head Computer Club; Friends With Wheels; The Heritage Golf Tournament; and was the Secretary of Dog Seven Association (USMC veterans of the Korean War). He enjoyed Happy Hour beers with his friends and square dancing with the Hilton Head Ocean Waves. He is survived by his wife Frances and two sons James Rattray of Huntington Beach, CA and Michael Rattray, of Charlotte, NC., and three grandchildren, Carolina, James Carlo, and Ruby. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, 45 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island 10:30am Wednesday, August 7. A reception will follow immediately after in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. www.theislandfuneralhome.com.
