Louis George Obituary

Louis Sam George

January 23, 1929 - October 14, 2025

Hilton Head, South Carolina - Louis Sam George - beloved husband of Betty Neumeyer George - was born in Huntington, West Virginia, on January 23, 1929. He died peacefully at his home in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on October 14, 2025, at the age of 96. He was the son of Helen Tweel George and had four siblings: Rosalie, Julius, Emil, and Raymond.

Louis enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1944 at the age of 15. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations as part of the 6th Marine Division. He was gravely injured in combat on June 19, 1945, during the assault and capture of Okinawa, Japan. Although army doctors believed he would not live more than a few years, he spent the next 80 proving them wrong. Louis received the Purple Heart, and his division earned a Presidential Unit Citation for "extraordinary heroism in action against enemy forces."

After the war, Louis earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from Marshall University and a law degree from West Virginia University. In Huntington, he was an esteemed practitioner of corporate law, with a vibrant career spanning over four decades.

Louis was happily married to Betty for 78 years and the proud patriarch of a family that includes sons Gary of Hopwood (PA), Anthony and his wife Kristin of Denver (CO), Eric and his wife Kimberly of New Orleans (LA), Aaron (deceased) and his wife Cheryl of Salt Lake City (UT), and Ethan and his wife Christina of Hilton Head (SC). He had nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren (with two more on the way this year), and three great-great-grandchildren.

Louis will be remembered for his fierce intellect, jovial spirit, infectious laugh, generous heart, and unending ability to spread joy wherever he went. He will be dearly missed by his wife, family, and all those whose lives he touched during his remarkable 96 years.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at Beard Mortuary, followed by a Graveside Service with Military Honors at 12:30 p.m. at Woodmere Memorial Park. Please leave an online condolence for his family at www.beardmortuary.com.
