Mary Coe Obituary

Mary Woodman Coe
July 22, 1936 - April 25, 2022
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina -
Mary Coe, passed away in her sleep on April 25, 2022. She was 85 years old. She is survived by her husband, Roger Coe, her son, Richard Coe of Bend, Oregon, and her daughter, Carolyn Coe, of Orland, Maine.
The daughter of John Woodman and Frances Marie Free was born on July 22, 1936, in Chariton, Iowa. She grew up in Russell, Iowa and graduated valedictorian at Russell High School. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Office Management and Business Education at the University of Iowa. At the University she became a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. Expanding on her musical background (playing the piano, organ and flute), at college she joined an all-woman bagpipe organization. She was elected to Pi Omega Pi, business education honorary, and went on to do graduate work in counseling and guidance at George Washington University.
Her employment history was initially teaching business education in Michigan, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Subsequently, she was manager of Off-Campus Programs for Indiana University at South Bend (IUSB) and then as Outreach Coordinator for the Division of Music at IUSB – which later became IUSB's Division of the Arts.
She was elected Elder of First Presbyterian Church in Elkhart and became involved in church choirs for more than forty years. Her involvement with music led her to become the Secretary of the Elkhart County Symphony Association. Other positions included becoming a member of the Samaritan Center Board of Directors in Elkhart, Secretary of the Indigo Run Women's Club, a member of the Women's Association of Hilton Head, Treasurer of the Bookmarkers Interest Group, and a member of the Adam Brinson I Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century – which led to the offices of Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary and Chaplain.
