Richard Lehmkuhl Obituary

Richard T. Lehmkuhl
November 21, 1932 - January 11, 2021
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Richard Theodore Lehmkuhl, 88, of Hilton Head, SC, passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2021 after a long courageous battle with cancer.
"Dick" was born November 21, 1932 to Elmer and LaRose Lehmkuhl in Piqua, OH. After graduating from Columbus West High School as President of his Senior Class in 1950, he enrolled at Ohio State University. Dick temporarily left OSU to join the Marines, where he flew FJ4 single engine jets from aircraft carriers in the Pacific. After achieving the rank of Captain, he returned to OSU to finish his degree in Industrial Management.
After graduation, he was hired by Owens-Illinois, rising to become Regional VP of sales. He left OI to become GM of Kerr Glass in Lancaster, PA. Dick loved the low country, so he "retired" from corporate life in 1984 to purchase the 1790 Inn in Savannah, where he worked side by side with the love of his life, Darline for 17 years. Known as a fiercely competitive person with a keen sense of humor, he spent his retirement conquering the course at Long Cove, and many others, shooting his age annually from 79 on. He was a proud, committed father to three children: Lisa, Rick, and Heidi.
Dick was predeceased by his parents Elmer and LaRose and his brother Victor and is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Darline; his children Lisa, Rick, and Heidi; grandchildren Ryan, David, Cory, Megan, Sara and Tyler; and great grandson Maddox.

My sympathies to the family. Met Dick back in the early 90's. David Wingo and I played the opening of 1790 Inn in Savannah. Always enjoyed the conversations and humor. RIP.

Dick will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege and honor of knowing him. He was a great golfing buddy and friend. He was a true gentleman in every respect with a terrific sense of humor. I will miss his presense, his laugh and the stories he could tell. Now he is dancing with the Angels and sharing his stories with them. God bless you, Dick. Rest in peace, buddy!

He was the unassuming sunflower in the garden of Life. The one who brought smiles and happiness and passed those things around. He was a dear uncle, I only wish I could have spent more time with him. Hang in there, all of you. Sending you great love.
