It was said that Sumner started Sheldon Academy so as to make a quality education available to his son, Richard. What he did was provide that opportunity for hundreds of Sheldon and Beaufort youth now spread over the globe. What a legacy!

Whenever I had the opportunity while at my home in Beaufort, upon seeing Richard, I would always inquire of his father. Sumner was truly a tremendous gentleman and leader. I will never forget the generous contribution that he made to my campaign when I ran for Beaufort County Board of Education. my thoughts and prayers are with and for the entire family during this time of loss, sorrow and grief. May God provide the comfort and peace during this time.

Sumner was indeed larger than life. He never assumed the aloofness or disinterest of one so important and successful. He was always well liked and a valued friend and acquaintance, very talented and more than generous. He was the guiding strength behind Sheldon Academy my first teaching assignment after college with an ever present smile and attentiveness to and interest in those he met and worked with. We have lost a good man.
