Theodore M. Mitchell, Jr.
November 25, 1933 - March 30, 2025
Dataw Island, South Carolina - Theodore M. Mitchell, Jr., age 91, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, at home on Dataw Island, South Carolina.
Ted was born on November 25, 1933, to the late Theodore Milo and Anne (Woodruff) Mitchell and was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut.
He was a 1951 graduate of Greenwich High School, where he lettered in three sports and made many lifelong friends. He attended St. Lawrence University and The University of Connecticut, with advanced studies at Penn State University. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Ted married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Pratley, in 1954 and they raised their five children in Greenwich. In addition to his beloved wife of 70 years; he is survived by his cherished children: Mark (Marie) of Greenwich, CT; Ted (Jody) of Stratford, CT; Susan of Greenwich, CT; Kenny (Tara) of Lincoln, MA and Heather Bonaparte (Dave) of Dataw Island, SC. He was immensely proud of his 15 grandchildren: Jessica (Tony), Ryan (Kelly), Allie, Andrew, Katie (Jake), Meghan, Claire (Mike), Patrick (Alexis), Ted, Philip (Liz), Will (Marisa), Charlie (Kate), Madeleine, Courtney and Brooke. He is survived by 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents; Ted was predeceased by his sister Claire Mitchell Slater (Richard); and his brother Albert W. Mitchell (Doris).
After his military service, Ted started his career in construction with the family firm, Peter F. Mitchell Corp. and retired from Yonkers Contracting Company, Inc. in 1999 as Vice President. At the time, he was also President of five subsidiary companies within Yonkers Contracting.
During his career, he was a member of the National Asphalt Paving Association and the New York State Asphalt Paving Association. He was on the Board of Directors of the New York General Contractors Association and a member of The Moles. In addition, he was on the President's Advisory Board of Dominican University in New York.
Ted and Pat traveled the world extensively throughout their marriage and fell in love with The Lowcountry of South Carolina in 1988, where they joined The Dataw Island Club and built their retirement home. Ted enjoyed golf and was thrilled to shoot a hole in one on The Morgan River course's 6th hole in 2006. Ted and Pat loved the camaraderie of The Fun Bunch-his golfing buddies and their wives. He will be remembered for his generosity, loyalty and for his mischievous sense of humor, which has been passed down to his large, loving family.
A celebration of Ted's life will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Lady's Island at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 7, 2025, with interment at the Columbarium on the grounds of St. Peter's. A reception will immediately follow at the Dataw Island Club.
