William McHenry Obituary

William Dunlap McHenry
June 20, 1932 - January 4, 2023
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - William D. McHenry (Bill) was born in 1932 to William Rodman and Bonita Passehl McHenry in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1950. He was active in sports playing football, co-captain his senior year. He also played basketball and lacrosse. He graduated from Washington and Lee University from the school of commerce and achieved a Masters Degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Bill was the captain of the last W&L subsidized football team. He was twice named to the United Press International All-American team as an honorable mention selection at Center. Bill also was a three year letterman in lacrosse. Following his senior season, he played in the Blue-Gray Football Classic in Alabama. He also played in the College All-Star game in Chicago. He was a sixth-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins but the Army drafted him at the same time so he never had the opportunity to play. Following his service time, he was an assistant football coach at Pennsylvania Military College (now Widner) for two years. He moved on to Williams College as head lacrosse coach and freshman football coach for three years. Bill then took over the Lebanon Valley College football team as head coach and Athletic Director for ten seasons. His football teams won the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship two times. He and his brother, Bob, started the lacrosse program at LVC as a major spring sport.
His alma mater called him back to W&L in 1971 where he took over as Athletic Director and also coached football. Bill's final assignment was at the College of Wooster in Ohio as Athletic Director. During the summers, Bill was on a staff of coaches who traveled to Italy, England, Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany to assist in introducing American Football to Europe. He retired from the College of Wooster in 1996.
Bill was active in the NCAA administration serving on numerous division III committees. He was inducted into the National Athletic Directors Hall of Fame (NACDA). He was also inducted into the W&L Hall of Fame, LVC Hall of Fame and the State of Pennsylvania Hall of Fame.
Upon retiring to Hilton Head Island, Bill was on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Board for 10 years and active with the FCA summer camps. He worked with the Impact Mentoring program in Hilton Head schools. He also worked with the fishing club during their summer camp. He and his wife, Joan, worked with Heroes on Horseback for 9 years.
Bill stayed very active in his retirement exercising regularly. He and Joan shared a love of swimming laps, playing tennis and bike riding together. They were members of the EZ Riders Bike Club. They enjoyed skiing and white water rafting in Colorado, trips to Sanibel Island, FL and Ocean City, NJ where he spent his summers growing up.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Joan Acker McHenry, of 69 years. He is predeceased by his brother, J. Robert McHenry and daughter, Deborah McHenry Hennis. Bill is survived by his son, Robert Charles McHenry (Lynette); six grandchildren, John (Tori), Katie (Jacob), Ryan (Candace), Jordan, Austin, Adam, Kellan and Brendan; six great-grandchildren Mac, Jack, Madeline, Emmet, William and Jacob; son-in-law, Patrick Hennis (Melissa).
Bill was a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, coach and friend.
A memorial service in honor of Bill will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Hilton Head on Sunday, January 29th at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the South Coastal FCA, PO Box 5192, Hilton Head, SC 29938.

Coach McHenry and Mrs. McHenry were special people. They loved W&L and were so gracious to me and countless others. Their love for W&L was apparent. We miss, but will never forget them.

Coach and Mrs. McHenry were gracious and loving friends to me. When our beloved Generals had home football games, they would open their beautiful home to me for the weekend. Everlasting memories.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Coach Bill McHenry. I had the privilege of playing football for Coach McHenry for three years at Washington and Lee University, and it was a wonderful experience, one of the most meaningful of my life. Coach McHenry was always very positive and encouraging, and playing for him was not only rewarding but also fun. Furthermore, he and Mrs. McHenry regularly invited us into their homes for Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings, and after I graduated and started coaching myself, I was able to join them at Fellowship of Christian Athletes coaches conference at Lake George, New York. I have many very fond memories of those occasions. I certainly want to pass on my most sincere condolences to Joan and to everyone in her family. My prayers are certainly with you. May the Lord richly bless you and grant you His comfort and peace at this time.

With great appreciation,
George Berry

Bill was my football coach at LVC. Bill actively helped me become a college coach, both football and lacrosse. As I look back on my experiences as a coach, I trace a path directly back to Coach Mack. His outstanding commitment to the nuances of football and lacrosse was amazing. His gift to all his players was the commitment to the value of character and leadership.
Joan - please extend to your family my sympathies and thanks for all Bill has meant to me throughout my life.

Coach McHenry was friendly and positive in his countenance and upbeat and enthusiastic in his attitude - always! He set a wonderful example for me (and many others), and his influence still colors my behavior and actions today.

Coach McHenry, Coach Mac to me, possessed all of the right qualities as a coach and leader in college athletics: decency, integrity, honesty, diligence, and determination, even in the face of adversity. He epitomized what it meant to be a gentleman, a person of faith, and a devoted family man. It was my good fortune to have him as a coach and mentor for three years. My heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones, especially his wife Joan, his son Rob, and his daughter Debbie's family.

A W&L hero. Coach was the epitome of the W&L scholar-athlete and gentleman. Coach meant so much to W&L athletics. His legacy will endure. He and Mrs McHenry often welcomed me into their lovely home. Will never forget you both.

The Coach was an inspiration to those who had the pleasure of serving with him. I was a graduate assistant coach for football, track and weight training from 1975 to 1977. I never worked for a finer man. Bill Hansen L ` 77

Saddened to hear of his passing. Very fond memories of Coach McHenry from W&L. A true "Five Star" General.

Bill was the AD who hired me 27 years ago at Wooster, with he and Joan allowing me to stay at their home while I waited for my wife to join me in Ohio. Bill was the best (and biggest!) cheerleader I, and our athletic dept, ever had. I remember Bill as unceasingly positive and a true gentle giant...his spirit of giving was contagious. Knowing he's not with us anymore is the world's loss for sure.
RIP Coach!
