To the family of Coach William McHenry:
I came to know Coach McHenry through Shenandoah Sports Camp during the 1970 and 1971 camping seasons, first as a Football camp participant, then, at the request of Coach McHenry to serve as a camp counselor and "Blue Goose" camp bus driver at age 16. The only requirement that Coach McHenry ask of me to be selected as the bus driver was that "being a farm boy" that I knew "how to drive a stick" transmission.
In preparation for the 1970 Football camp, Coach McHenry solicited three special guest college football coaches all of whom were ultimately the three top winning coaches in college football history, namely Penn State Head Coach Joe Paterno (409 career wins), Grambling State University Head Coach Eddie Robinson (408 career wins), and West Virginia University and Florida State University Head Coach Bobby Bowden (377 career wins). All three of these esteemed coaches participated in the 1971 Shenandoah Sports Football Camp at Bridgewater College. I'm sure that Coach McHenry, as the chief organizer of the Camp, had no clue, at that time, the talent of those special guest coaches would ultimately contribute to the world of college football. As it turned out, I ultimately was recruited by Coach Bobby Bowden and accepted an NCAA Football Scholarship to attend West Virginia University. Incidentally, I was recruited by Coach Joe Paterno (Penn State) and each of the coaches on Coach McHenry's camp staff. As it turned out, I was honored to be named the the West Virginia All State Teams in both 1971 and 1972. Additional honors came my way having been named to three All-American Teams, Parade Magazine, Coach & Athlete-Sunkist Growers, and Scouting Systems of America. Over all these years, I have given all the praise and glory for these accomplishments to God and Coach McHenry and his Coaching Staff at Shenandoah Sports Camp.
I regret that I never found the opportunity thank Coach McHenry personally for all he did for me. But, now I have the opportunity to thank you, the family of Coach William McHenry.

Coach McHenry and Mrs. McHenry were special people. They loved W&L and were so gracious to me and countless others. Their love for W&L was apparent. We miss, but will never forget them.

Coach and Mrs. McHenry were gracious and loving friends to me. When our beloved Generals had home football games, they would open their beautiful home to me for the weekend. Everlasting memories.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Coach Bill McHenry. I had the privilege of playing football for Coach McHenry for three years at Washington and Lee University, and it was a wonderful experience, one of the most meaningful of my life. Coach McHenry was always very positive and encouraging, and playing for him was not only rewarding but also fun. Furthermore, he and Mrs. McHenry regularly invited us into their homes for Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings, and after I graduated and started coaching myself, I was able to join them at Fellowship of Christian Athletes coaches conference at Lake George, New York. I have many very fond memories of those occasions. I certainly want to pass on my most sincere condolences to Joan and to everyone in her family. My prayers are certainly with you. May the Lord richly bless you and grant you His comfort and peace at this time.
With great appreciation,
George Berry

Bill was my football coach at LVC. Bill actively helped me become a college coach, both football and lacrosse. As I look back on my experiences as a coach, I trace a path directly back to Coach Mack. His outstanding commitment to the nuances of football and lacrosse was amazing. His gift to all his players was the commitment to the value of character and leadership.
Joan - please extend to your family my sympathies and thanks for all Bill has meant to me throughout my life.

I met Bill when he came to the College of Wooster. He was always doing the right thing for the right reasons. My wife and I and the Wooster community will miss him.

I had the pleasure of being on staff at W&L, when he was the AD. He was nicest person I have ever met. My condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.

Coach McHenry was friendly and positive in his countenance and upbeat and enthusiastic in his attitude - always! He set a wonderful example for me (and many others), and his influence still colors my behavior and actions today.

Coach McHenry, Coach Mac to me, possessed all of the right qualities as a coach and leader in college athletics: decency, integrity, honesty, diligence, and determination, even in the face of adversity. He epitomized what it meant to be a gentleman, a person of faith, and a devoted family man. It was my good fortune to have him as a coach and mentor for three years. My heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones, especially his wife Joan, his son Rob, and his daughter Debbie's family.

A W&L hero. Coach was the epitome of the W&L scholar-athlete and gentleman. Coach meant so much to W&L athletics. His legacy will endure. He and Mrs McHenry often welcomed me into their lovely home. Will never forget you both.

The Coach was an inspiration to those who had the pleasure of serving with him. I was a graduate assistant coach for football, track and weight training from 1975 to 1977. I never worked for a finer man. Bill Hansen L ` 77

Bill was the AD who hired me 27 years ago at Wooster, with he and Joan allowing me to stay at their home while I waited for my wife to join me in Ohio. Bill was the best (and biggest!) cheerleader I, and our athletic dept, ever had. I remember Bill as unceasingly positive and a true gentle giant...his spirit of giving was contagious. Knowing he's not with us anymore is the world's loss for sure.
RIP Coach!
