Lynn - Mr. James R. Mathews, 84, of Lynn passed on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 in the Lahey Medical Center, Peabody surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Jean M. (Shipper) Mathews, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. He was born in Lynn, the son of the late Richard and Mary (Stover) Mathews. He was raised and lived his whole life in Lynn. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School.
Mr. Mathews was a 3 year Army Veteran who served a year overseas in the 304th Expeditionary Signal Battalion in Korea. He last served as a Specialist 4 in Headquarters Company at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. He was a member of the PLAV in Lynn. He was employed as a computer operator at the General Electric Company, Riverworks Plant for over 35 years . Retiring in 1994.
Jim loved the outdoors, hunting , fishing and trapping. He was an avid reader. Mr. Mathews was a devout Christian, he loved being part of the men's ministry in his church. He enjoyed his morning radio listening to sermons and religious programs on AM 590. He attended Calvary Christian Church in Lynnfield. He was a friend to many and loved by all. Most of all Mr. Mathews spent his life as a devoted husband, father, uncle, and Grampy.
He is survived by his children, Tina M. and Rick Ford, Charlene J. Leighton, Katherine M. Mathews, Tracey A. and Paul Comeau, Kimberly L. Mathews, Carolee A. Durant, his grandchildren, Erin M. and Eric J. Sheehan, Joseph R. Ford, Jonathan M. Leighton, Steven J. and Katie Leighton, Richard "Buddy" A. and Marilyn Ford, Kevin J. Durant, Kyle S. Durant, Sean P. Comeau, Mitchell P. Comeau; his great grandchildren Madison and Nolan Sheehan, Willow and Sullivan Leighton. He was the Father in Law of the late Derek Durant.
Service Information: His funeral service will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021, at 11:00 AM in the Calvary Christian Church, 47 Grove Street, Lynnfield, MA . A Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Solimine's Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Rte 129) Lynn.
