Marilyn McGuinness Obituary

Marilyn B. McGuinness, 89
1934 - 2023
Lynn, MA - Marilyn Beverly (Ellis) McGuinness, age 89, of Lynn, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of William F. McGuinness, Sr., with whom she shared over 67 years of marriage. Born in Taunton, in 1934, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Angelina (Pero) Ellis and moved to Lynn in 1937. She was raised and educated in Lynn and graduated from Lynn English High School. She went on to receive her Bachelor's Degree from Salem State College in 1955 and later her Master's Degree in Reading and English. Marilyn was a beloved teacher in the City of Lynn for many years and was a proud member of the Lynn Teachers Union, AFT Local 1037. She taught at Shoemaker, Connery and Cobbet Elementary Schools, Breed and Pickering Jr. High Schools and at St. Michael's, St. Patrick's and St. Mary's Grammar Schools. She was a longtime and active member at the Lynn Historical Society and the Topsfield Fair Society. She had a passion for quilting and x-stitching and won many Blue Ribbons for her pieces at the Topsfield Fair. Marilyn wrote a book, "Stitching by Candlelight", a compilation of the history of the women whose x-stitch pieces are in the Lynn Historical Society's collection. She created patterns from the originals and put together kits that the LHS could sell in the museum's gift shop. She was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with her family.
In addition to her husband Bill, she is survived by her loving children, James P. McGuinness and his wife Jo Anne of Oklahoma, Catherine A. (McGuinness) Vigue of Lynn and John M. McGuinness and his wife Mary of Nantucket; her 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces and 2 nephews. She was predeceased by her son William F. McGuinness, Jr. in July of 2022 and her sister Maureen Clay and her husband Alan.

I fondly remember Marilyn as my supervising teacher when I did my student teaching with her at the Sewell-Anderson School in 1974. Over the years I kept in touch with her and Bill when I taught at Breed Jr. High School. She was a wonderful and kind teacher and person. I am so very sorry to hear of her passing. My thought and prayers are with the family.
