Nahant - Robert James Devereaux passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, after having just celebrated his 91st birthday. Bob was the son of the late James and Rose Devereaux and grew up in Nahant.
He attended school in Swampscott (St. John's) and graduated from St. Mary's Boys High School, Class of 1952, and the College of the Holy Cross. After serving in the US Army, (Heidelberg, Germany), Bob returned to Boston and in 1969 established the Robert J. Devereaux Corp., an independent utility contractor that is now run by his nephew Michael. He also established M&X Utility Company, a union contractor.
Bob was a generous person to his employees, his family, and many who had the good fortune to cross his path. Bob loved to sail on his beloved sloop "The Rose," that he purchased when visiting his sister and her husband in Taiwan. Bob enjoyed skiing and good times at the chalet he built at Mount Snow, Vermont, and golf in Naples, Florida.
Bob was a major benefactor to St. Mary's High School where he established scholarships and was instrumental in its growth. Bob created the Devereaux Family Trust that benefited many organizations including Emmanuel College (Bob was a former Trustee), College of the Holy Cross, Lynn Babe Ruth, Dana Farber, and Mass General Hospital. Bob was a recipient of the Cushing Award at St. Mary's and a member of its Hall of Fame.
Bob leaves nieces Jean Burns, Ellen Johnson, and Paula Devereaux, nephews James Ogar, James Devereaux, and Michael Devereaux, and their families, especially his great niece Rose who brought him laughter and joy in his last years. He was predeceased by his siblings Mary Ogar, James J. Devereaux, Jr., Paul Devereaux, and Jeanne Arsenault. Bob was an incredible uncle and patriarch of the Devereaux family, and his guidance will be missed. We would like to thank the residents and staff at The Bertram House, and Kaplan Family Hospice House for their support, care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Mary's High School Foundation, Inc.
Service Information: Bob's funeral will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025 at 10 am at St. Mary's Church, 8 South Common Street, Lynn, MA followed by burial at Greenlawn Cemetery Nahant. Visiting hours on Thursday, July 31, 2025 from 4 pm to 7 pm at SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 67 Ocean Street (Rt1A), Lynn, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
