Gulab Punwani Obituary

Gulab Punwani
Gulab Punwani, who passed away at the age of 79, had a long and fulfilling life as a Chemical Engineer. A humorist with a kind, loving heart, admired for his integrity and intellect, he was charmingly witty and fascinating to talk to.
Gulab was born in Karachi, India, on December 17, 1935, where his father was a Civil Engineer. Gulab was educated in India and Germany, were he graduated with a Masters in Chemical Engineering. He went on to work with prominent companies like Siemens Germany. Eventually he settled in the state of Delaware where he worked for Getty Oil.
Post retirement, his love of travel led him to open a travel agency in San Clemente, CA. San Clemente remained one of the places closest to his heart.
Gulab remained a bachelor throughout his life and is survived by his six loving sisters and thirteen nieces and nephews who affectionately referred to him as "Gul Mama".
He was a treasured individual who touched the lives of everyone he encountered and will be missed terribly by all.

Few people have the strength to be positive and smile every day. Uncle Gul has that strength.

I noted with much grief the sad loss of Gulab whom I have known from high school days; him at Hindi High School and me at the Zila School in Hazaribagh, Bihar (now Jharkhand). We finished schooling in 1952 and parted only to meet again through you, Shanta.
We met several times since; in LA at your house, at the most memorable MonaChristian wedding in Paris, at Padma's in Los Altos Hill, and at West Palm Beach in Florida prior to him moving back to LA for health reasons. It was at Mona's wedding when Gul made me and Mussarat an honorary member of the Punwani family and therefore we feel we ought to share our intense feelings that we have for him.
Although not met recently we were in regular contact with each other either through email or phone, when he would update us with the entire family events. The way he talked about his family members, he obviously had a great deal of love and affection for his only brother, sisters and their respective children and grandchildren. He always had a continuous smile on his face which may have concealed toughness that he had within him. That smile and his warmth will be missed for a long time.
