Sarah Eleanor Meek

1923 - 2022

July 2, 1923 - January 30, 2022 Sarah Eleanor Meek (Eleanor to family and friends), 98, of Upland, California, passed away January 30, 2022. Eleanor was born in the family farmhouse near Reedy, West Virginia on July 2, 1923 to Webster Clyde Romine and Bertha Archer Romine. Eleanor walked all over the hills of her birthplace and graduated from high school in West Virginia. She earned a teaching degree in West Virginia and began teaching. In the 1940's, her family (parents and four younger brothers) left the West Virginia farm and moved to Los Angeles. At dance classes in Los Angeles, she met William Eugene Meek (Bill). Eleanor married Bill on February 2, 1944 in Lynwood, California. They had two children. After both children were in school, Eleanor earned a Bachelor's Degree and teaching certificate from the University of La Verne. Eleanor taught elementary school in the Chino Unified School District for more than 20 years. Eleanor and her husband Bill enjoyed square dancing, rockhounding, prospecting for gold, and travel. Eleanor had a passion for family, learning, jigsaw and word puzzles, card games, nature, and history. Blue was her favorite color. She lived in southern California for more than 70 years (in Upland for more than 50), but her heart and her college sports team were in West Virginia. She read the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin every day and her favorite newspaper writer was David Allen. Eleanor is survived by her children Patricia Crespillo of El Dorado Hills and William Edward Meek (Denneen) of Sahuarita, Arizona; her grandchildren Douglas Cowley (Gina) of Orange and Lisa Cowley of El Dorado Hills; her great grandchildren Cameron Cowley (Sara) of Mesquite, Texas; Amber Cowley (Mike) of Quartz Hill; Ian Cowley of Orange; Elizabeth Cowley of Orange; and Skyla Yoho of Pueblo, Colorado; and her great great grandchildren Dmitri and Greyson.
